     Extractions:   Algerian Fish Soup Tablespoon olive oil Large Spanish onion Cloves garlic 10 ounce can whole tomatoes Teaspoon paprika A pinch of crushed saffron Salt and pepper to taste Large potatoes Stalks of celery diced Cups of chicken broth Pounds firm white fish Heat oil in a large sauté pan and sauté onion until translucent. Add garlic and tomatoes and continue to simmer until most of the liquid has been absorbed. Add spices, potatoes and broth. Simmer for 10 minutes. Add fish and continue to cook until the fish flakes. A brief power struggle followed between moderates and militants ended when Colonel Boumedienne lead the Arme de Liberation to victory. Ben Bella was elected prime minister promising a "revolutionary Arab-Islamic state based on the principles of socialism and collective leadership within Algeria and anti-imperialism abroad. These ideals were quickly put in to practice by landless peasants as they moved onto the land vacated by the French and established cooperative farms to be administered by peasant councils. Nationalisation of major industries proceeded. However the redistribution of land was limited to that which had been French owned, resulting in large estates still owned by rich Algerians. The call for liberation of women particularly frightened these conservative landowners. In 1963 and 1964 army revolts broke out centred on the slogan "Islam is not compatible with socialism". The people were disenchanted with civil disorder and economic stagnation after the sacrifice of an entire generation impatient for progress and prosperity.

The coming of the Ottoman Empire lead to the Spanish losing the coastal strip which they had held. It subsequently became a pirate base for attacking European fleets. The French launched a military attack in 1830 and having obtained a foothold in North Africa, held on and expanded it. Algeria achieved independence in 1962, despite opposition from many French quarters. The victorious FLN (Front de Libération Nationale) Front Islamique du Salut (FIS, Islamic Salvation Front) whose growing support have since changed the face of Algerian politics. In May the following year, the Government was forced to resign by a FIS-led general strike. Only decisive action by President Chadli, backed by the security forces, prevented an outright FIS takeover. Nonetheless, the Government persevered with its democratisation programme, holding general elections as scheduled in January 1992, which resulted in a comprehen-sive victory for the FIS, but was followed by the military's decision to annul the result. The country has since been governed under a state of emergency. Against this background, at the end of June 1992, the State President Mohamed Boudiaf was assassinated. The last 12 months have since seen a stand-off between the Government and the Islamic opposition, as the military have maintained tight control over the security situation.
