There was a heavy police presence in Tirana's Skanderbeg Square as Sali Berisha led a march by several thousand supporters, but the police did not intervene. The marchers then returned to nearby Democratic headquarters. The government of Socialist Prime Minister Fatos Nano had banned the rally, in the wake of rioting and gunfire around the capital on Monday. A statement read on Albanian television warned that police were authorized to "shoot without warning" if opposed. Berisha, who is Albania's former president, urged his supporters to march peacefully and refrain from shouting slogans.

The UCPMB has been urged to lay down their weapons before Yugoslav troops return to the final section of the three-mile (five-kilometre)-wide buffer zone along Serbia's boundary with Kosovo on May 24. Rebel commander Gezim Ostreni said three UCPMB soldiers were killed in clashes on Tuesday when they withdrew from Oraovica after Yugoslav troops launched a swift offensive. Rebels captured the village on Saturday.
