Extractions: Recyclers soon will charge to cover costs By Steve Williams Haines Friends of Recycling soon will charge five cents per pound to drop off used paper, plastic, cardboard and metal cans. The proposal, approved by the recycling board in April, could be implemented as early as next month, pending installation of a scale to weigh recyclables. Friends of Recycling board president Burl Sheldon said the group needs to find new ways to raise money. Last year, the recycling center on Small Tracts Road took in 338,000 pounds of material. At five cents per pound, that would have brought in $16,900, enough to sustain the center and reduce its dependence on borough and other grants, Sheldon said. "This will enable us to be stable and sustainable. Five cents is a good value for the community and helps us become a more viable community business." The fee will still leave recycling the least costly method for consumers to dispose of newspapers, magazines, catalogues, tin and steel cans, plastic containers, and cardboard. Haines Sanitation charges 12 cents per pound to dispose of household solid waste. ACME Transfer charges 10 cents per pound.
