Extractions: Last Modified: July 27, 2005 at 05:50 PM Architects design work space to suit specific businesses all the time. Why not do that for schools? Not just any schools: Chugach Optional and Polaris K-12 run two unusual alternative programs. So, for their multimillion-dollar remodels, architects have given them unconventional-but-functional space to match. Walls are few so that rooms flow into each other at Chugach, a school built around the concept of open space, sharing energy and learning among classrooms and grade levels. At Polaris, the district's only all-ages school, architects have designed a place that's both fun and sleek to appeal to kindergartners on up to high-schoolers. Walls are mostly blank so kids can paint all over them a Polaris tradition tied to the school's creative vibe. Local firm McCool Carlson Green designed both schools.
