Encyclopedia Anchorage Äng kÉrÄj ) , city (1990 pop. 226,338), Anchorage census div., S central Alaska, a port at the head of Cook Inlet; inc. 1920. It is the largest city in the state, the administrative and commercial heart of S central and W Alaska, one of the nation's key defense centers, and a vital transportation hub. Glenn Highway connects the city to the Alaska Highway and the Parks Highway. The international airport is a regular stop on intercontinental and transpolar flights. The city includes two U.S. military bases, Fort Richardson and Elmendorf Air Force Base. Anchorage is also the headquarters for the major oil and gas companies in Alaska. With oil discoveries in Cook Inlet in the late 1950s, and the discovery of massive petroleum and natural gas reserves in the Prudhoe Bay region in 1968, the population has more than quadrupled. Tourism has also increased dramatically, largely due to improvements in transportation and the creation of numerous national parks. Anchorage was founded (1915) as construction headquarters for the Alaska RR and grew as a railroad town. It also became a fishing center, a market and supply point for gold-mining regions to the north, and the metropolis for the coal mining and farming of the Matanuska valley. World War II brought the establishment of the large military bases and the enormous growth of air and rail traffic. The city suffered severe damage in the 1964 earthquake. Points of interest include Earthquake Park and several notable museums. The annual Iditarod Race (see under

Extractions: My Own Private Alaska For outsiders, Alaska is magical. That was dramatically demonstrated to me in December 2004 in Cairo. At an Internet café a day before my departure, I met a German journalist. He asked, where are you from. I replied, Alaska. His eyes grew wide, and he appeared stunned. I laughed. For him, Alaska was an exotic, wild land. But, for me, Alaska was then, and is now, truly home. I moved here in 2004, driving the Alcan highway from Seattle, to take a new job in Anchorage. I came with legitimate concerns about Alaskas winters, its unfair ratio of men to women, and its hyper-conservative political culture. But, I also knew what I was in for. During the summer of 1992, I lived in Sitka, in the states Southeast, where I worked as a newspaper reporter. To my surprise, I sailed through my first Alaska winter 2004-05 in Anchorage without a hitch, thanks mainly to my love of skate skiing and perhaps a love of winter Ill credit to my Finnish genes. My latest home town, Anchorage, is the states largest city. Some ridicule the biggest northern metropolis of the United States as Los Anchorage, as the community sprawls wildly on a peninsula at the base of the scenic Chugach Mountains. For all its many illssoulless shopping centers, the absence of a coherent urban design, the utter dominance of automobilesthe city still has many charms. For instance, I share the city with some 300,000 souls and several hundred urban moose, who are both cute and annoying on city trails and streets. Where else can you see moose running through the downtown of a small-to-mid-sized city. Well, this happens in Anchorage.

Extractions: high temperatures on a given day in the United States to reach 70 degrees Fahrenheit (about 40 degrees Celsius). The United States owes much of its national character and its wealth to its good fortune in having such a large and varied landmass to inhabit and cultivate. Yet the country still exhibits marks of regional identity, and one way Americans cope with the size of their country is to think of themselves as linked geographically by certain traits, such as New England self-reliance, southern hospitality, midwestern wholesomeness, western mellowness. This chapter examines American geography, history, and customs through the filters of six main regions: New England , made up of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island. The Middle Atlantic , comprising New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, and Maryland. The South , which runs from Virginia south to Florida and west as far as central Texas. This region also includes West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas, Louisiana, and parts of Missouri and Oklahoma. The Midwest , a broad collection of states sweeping westward from Ohio to Nebraska and including Michigan, Indiana, Wisconsin, Illinois, Minnesota, Iowa, parts of Missouri, North Dakota, South Dakota, Kansas, and eastern Colorado.

Representative areas of the world should be selected for detailed studies of the content standards. In this course students learn how to apply a geographic perspective to the past, present, and future. This Seventh Grade study of geography supports the study of world history in the Eighth and Ninth Grades as well as the study of U.S. history in the Tenth and Eleventh Grades. The six essential elements of geography are used to organize the content standards. Geographic skills and perspectives ( Geography for Life , 1994) are interwoven throughout the content standards." Extractions: ICPSR Direct Site Map Data Resources Analyze Data on the Web ... Home Census geography provides the framework for interpreting, analyzing, and understanding census data. The Census Bureau classifies all geographic entities into two broad categories: legal and administrative entities, and statistical entities. Legal/Administrative entities generally originate from charters, laws, treaties, resolutions, or court decisions. They include: Congressional District. One of the 435 areas from which people are elected to the U.S. House of Representatives. County. The primary legal division of every state except Alaska and Louisiana. A number of geographic entities are not legally designated as a county, but are recognized by the Census Bureau as equivalent to a county for data presentation purposes. These include the boroughs, city and boroughs, municipalities, and census areas in Alaska; parishes in Louisiana; and cities that are independent of any county in Maryland, Missouri, Nevada, and Virginia. They also include the municipios in Puerto Rico, districts and islands in American Samoa, municipalities in the Northern Mariana Islands, and islands in the Virgin Islands of the United States. Because they contain no primary legal divisions, the Census Bureau treats the District of Columbia and Guam each as equivalent to a county (as well as equivalent to a state) for data presentation purposes. In American Samoa, a county is a minor civil division.

The Colorado Desert also crosses over into Arizona and extends down into Baja California. The saguaro cacti is probably the most famous plant and symbol of the Sonoran Desert. Saguaro National Park (named after the cactus) contains exceptional stands of saguaro cacti, and their protection is one of the main reasons for establishment of the park. Extractions: Alaska is America's largest and most diverse state, and offers an extraordinary variety of opportunities for specialist teachers, related service providers and mild disability special educators. Specialist teaching positions are not limited to SESA. They may be found in school districts throughout the state. Alaska's fifty-four school districts and numerous geographic, cultural, and climatic regions afford Cheechakos (newcomers) an inviting array of settings in which to work, live and play. Rural Alaska is virtually exploding with new services and technology. Some of the best equipped schools in the country are found in Alaskan villages, and many boast excellent teacher housing and support services. Generally situated on the beautiful bays and rivers of rural and remote Alaska, villages and the country surrounding them represent the "real Alaska" to insiders. Village schools attract special educators and classroom teachers who enjoy cross-cultural friendships and experiences, and who respect the values and traditions of Alaska's Native cultures. Larger than villages, Alaska's small towns offer unique Alaskan lifestyles. "Northern Exposure" and "Cicely" were fiction, but there are real towns scattered throughout the state, each infused with the recreational, cultural, historical and ecological individuality of its particular region. Often these small towns are hubs for transportation, retail businesses and social services which offer options and conveniences rarely found in Lower 48 communities of similar size.
