Alabama Heritage: Zitella Cocke: ALABAMA'S FORGOTTEN POET Full text of the article, Zitella Cocke alabama S FORGOTTEN POET from Cocke published essays and short stories in newspapers and magazines such as http://www.findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_qa4113/is_200507/ai_n14779009
Extractions: Save a personal copy of this article and quickly find it again with Furl.net. It's free! Save it. ALTHOUGH FAMOUS IN THE LITERARY CIRCLES OF BOSTON, PARIS, AND BEYOND, ZITELLA COCKE NEVER FORGOT HER SOUTHERN ROOTS. FROM HER HOME IN BOSTON, Zitella Cocke reacted with self-effacing surprise to the news that Dr. Thomas M. Owen, head of the Alabama Department of Archives and History, wanted to include her in his four-volume History of Alabama and Dictionary of Alabama Biography. Gocke had left her home in Marion, Alabama, decades earlier. It had been in the North that she made a name for herself as a poet. And while she had achieved renown on both sides of the Atlantic, southerners scarcely knew her work. It was undeniably the work of a southerner, though. Cocke had never forgotten her roots; her heritage shaped her manners, her sympathies, and, most of all, her art. Whether she realized it or not, she had earned a place in Dr. Owen's book.
