Wilson Lake In Alabama The Geological Survey of alabama has interactive maps showing the locations of boat ramps at www.gsa.state.al.us/gsa/GIS/boataccessdetails.html http://www.outdooralabama.com/fishing/freshwater/where/reservoirs/wilson/
Extractions: Wilson Lake Wilson Reservoir is located in northern Alabama near the towns of Florence and Muscle Shoals. The reservoir extends upstream for 15 miles to Wheeler Dam and covers 15,500 acres. Largemouth bass, smallmouth bass and catfish are targeted most often by anglers on Wilson Lake. No minimum size limit is effect for largemouth bass and spotted bass, and the minimum length limit for smallmouth bass is 14-inches. A Lake Wilson smallmouth bass caught by Bill Belew. During the fall, smallmouth bass congregate in the tailwaters of Wheeler Dam. Most anglers drift live threadfin shad, locally called yellowtails, in the swift current for trophy smallmouths. Other species that congregate below Wheeler Dam are hybrid and saltwater striped bass in the spring, sauger in the winter, and blue catfish and channel catfish during the summer. This area is very popular with both boats and bank anglers. A fishing platform directly below the dam is convenient for bank anglers. Wheeler Lake In North Central Alabama The Geological Survey of alabama has interactive maps showing the locations of boat ramp at www.gsa.state.al.us/gsa/GIS/boataccessdetails.html http://www.outdooralabama.com/fishing/freshwater/where/reservoirs/wheeler/
Extractions: Fish and Fishing in Wheeler Lake Wheeler Reservoir is located in north central Alabama half way between Birmingham and Nashville. Alabama's second largest is one of TVA's lakes and stretches 60 miles from Guntersville Dam to Wheeler Dam near Rogersville. The upper end of the reservoir is a run-of-the-river reservoir as it goes past Huntsville and begins spreading out near Decatur. Stump flats, weed beds, and creek channels are popular locations in the middle section. The lower end has many steep banks and long points. Bass fishing is the most popular fishery in Wheeler Reservoir. Largemouth bass are the primary species, but smallmouth bass are common from Decatur to the west end, especially from Elk River down. The northern strain of spotted bass are common too, and are primarily near the main channel. This reservoir is home to quality fishing for a variety of fish. Catfish fishing is excellent, and William McKinley caught the previous world record blue catfish, 111 pounds, from Wheeler Reservoir on July 5, 1996. Bream (bluegill, redear sunfish, and longear sunfish) fishing is excellent, also. Crappie grow exceptionally fast here. Sauger run upstream during the winter and early spring and are caught below Guntersville Dam. Striped bass, hybrids and white bass make spring runs too and can be caught schooling during the summer. Alabama Starting in 1999, the MMS/alabama Cooperative began efforts to involve other Sand Resources and Shoreline Profile Geospatial Data and interactive maps. http://www.mms.gov/sandandgravel/alabama.htm
Extractions: Coastal Alabama is a center for regional tourist, recreational, industrial, and military activities. The Main Pass of Mobile Bay divides the coastal region into two sections: Dauphin Island to the west and the Morgan Peninsula to the east. Each coastal segment contains archeologically, historically, and environmentally sensitive areas. For example, an archeological site from the Mississippian Indian culture (900 - 1700 A.D.) is located on Dauphin Island. Sites with modern historic significance include: Fort Gaines on the eastern tip of Dauphin Island and Fort Morgan on the western end of the Morgan Peninsula. The sites were pivotal factors during the Battle of Mobile Bay in 1864. The State of Alabama, represented by the Geological Survey of Alabama (GSA), continues to work with us to determine the feasibility of using sand from Target Site 4, a large sand resource located in Federal waters, to nourish the eroding Dauphin Island. The second year of the planned 3-year project focuses on modeling the regional geological system incorporating the area offshore Dauphin Island. The impact of Hurricane Danny on the Alabama Coast heightened public support for use of offshore sand to repair the Morgan Peninsula beaches. The Cooperative conducted geological reconnaissance and site assessments of the offshore region in 1998. Starting in 1999, the MMS/Alabama Cooperative began efforts to involve other agencies and groups in the process of developing the Federal sand resources offshore of the Morgan Peninsula, and is continuing detailed assessment of coastal and nearshore sedimentary and erosional regimes.
