Extractions: According to a recent report by the Education Trust, In Need of Improvement: Ten Ways the U.S. Department of Education Has Failed To Live Up to Its Teacher Quality Commitments, there is too little focus on the teacher quality provisions in the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act and widespread confusion about what those provisions mean. As a result, the report finds, NCLB is seen by many as an attempt to arbitrarily punish experienced teachers. (600k PDF file) How to Evaluate Your Professional Development Program This article in Educational Leadership (September 2002) summarizes the findings of two recent reports that offer very different perspectives. Meeting the Highly Qualified Teachers Challenge: The Secretary's Annual Report on Teacher Quality was issued by the U.S. Department of Education in June 2002. Two days later, the Educational Testing Service announced the release of A National Priority: Americans Speak on Teacher Quality, which examined the results of its national survey of the U.S. public's attitudes about the quality of the teaching force. Universal Proficiency: The New Education Agenda For the last half-century, education policies and practices were focused on providing universal access to public education. The passage of No Child Left Behind marks a major turning point, shifting the policy focus from universal access to universal proficiency. In this roundtable interview (School Administrator, September 2003), five prominent school reform experts consider the implications of this sea change for the work of education leaders.

SETDA's NLI Toolkit 2003 - Executive Summary At the annual alabama education Technology Association Symposium, district technology The guidebook was developed by a team of Ohio SchoolNet staff, http://www.setda.org/Toolkit2003/execsum/es4a.htm
Extractions: Because of a shortage in revenue in FY03, the Alabama legislature cut many educational programs, one of which was technology. In fact, state funding for technology to the local school districts was cut from $181 per teacher to zero. At the annual Alabama Education Technology Association Symposium, district technology leaders and superintendents met in roundtable discussions concerning the funding crisis. Their discussions led to the exploration of the question, "Do our leaders really understand what would happen in our schools if the technology was suddenly turned off?" The concept of a "Technology Blackout Day" was conceived. After further discussions it was decided that turning off all of the technology for a day would be unsafe to the school children. Therefore, a more positive approach was taken to educate key decision makers on the value of technology in our educational system. A

WHAT THE UNIVERSITY OFFERS Job Satisfaction Perhaps the most important benefit The University of West Alabama has to offer its faculty is the opportunity to work with a congenially integrated and interestingly diverse student body. The University prides itself on providing a warm and nurturing environment for its students, some 40% of whom are African-American, and a faculty member can expect a high level of interaction with students. The University is proud of the accomplishments of many of its African-American alumni, including former students like Trudie Edwards Darden, who enrolled in the pre-med program at The University of West Alabama at age fourteen and at age eighteen was choosing between medical school and a movie career. She chose medicine and was the youngest student ever admitted to the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Medicine. Deberenia Allen, Brenda Larkin, and Versie Lee Slay also chose medicine as a career. Dr. Allen and Dr. Slay practice in Atlanta, and Dr. Larkin serves with the US Navy.
