Extractions: Day two begins with an exploration of Lome , the vibrant capital of Togo . We will visit the central market of Lome with its famous Mercedes Mama's (Nana-Benz), the colonial buildings in the administrative quarter, and the fetish market- where an eclectic assortment of all the necessary ingredients for love potions and magical concoctions are sold. Afterwards we travel north to Atakpame a wonderful city surrounded by hills, in order to visit the weavers of kente, a fabric worn by kings and queens on ceremonial occasions. Traveling to central Togo we visit villages inhabited by people indigenous to northern Togo . Their ancestors were forced to settle in central Togo by the colonial government many generations ago. Despite the passage of time the indigenous northerners practice their ancient traditions in order to maintain a symbolic link to the land of their origins. In the evening we are invited to witness a fire-dance, which is an animist tradition still practiced today despite the century long presence of Islam. Trusting the power transmitted from father to son, the dancers throw themselves fearless into the fire. Not only do they walk on the burning embers, they also hold fire red coals in their hands and pass them over their body without leaving any burn marks on their skin.
Extractions: Hancock County's long, colorful history dates back to the early French explorers, and today encompasses the exploration of space. Lifestyles reflect a diversity of cultures, and heritage is celebrated in festivals, fairs, food and architecture. While maintaining these generations - old traditions, our residents welcome the progress introduced by new commercial activity. The year of its birth, 1963, was a year of optimism for the Port and Harbor Commission. The huge NASA rocket testing center was under construction, and construction work of all types was at a record high. Hancock County residents had begun to think big. A barge and seaport did not seem to be an impractical dream. After months of meetings and discussions, the Commission employed a nationally known engineering firm, Michael Baker Company, to conduct a study as to where and what kind of seaport and industrial park should be located in Hancock County. After months of study regarding water access, rail proximity, availability of large tracts of land, elevation of property sites, and many other considerations, the engineers' report proposed a location in western Hancock COunty, adjacent to Mulatto Bayou. Though it would require dredging a ship channel from the Pearl River and a barge channel along the northern perimeter of the industrial park, the site's advantages far outweighed any other possible location.

Extractions: Wednesday 20 March Kisho Kurokawa is one of the most important figures in Japanese contemporary architecture today. Since the 1960s, his buildings have set new standards in design and presentation, both in Japan and abroad. Now, his ecologically-inspired, sustainable urban design projects have put his philosophies at the forefront of city regeneration programmes worldwide. These form the main theme of an exhibition at Kew Gardens this spring. The exhibition focuses on the latest of Kurokawa's urban design schemes in Malaysia, China and Kazakhstan. It illustrates how he draws on the themes of nature, symbiosis and change in his work to inform an organic, sustainable and integrated approach to urban environments. Kisho Kurokawa was born in Nagaya in1934 and became one of the founder members of the Japanese Metabolism Group in the 1960s. Today he has a large practice in Tokyo and his ideas have evolved into the highly developed theory of Symbiosis which lies behind many of his ecological designs.

Extractions: After six years and nearly $2.4 billion, the Master Plan Construction Program at San Francisco International Airport (SFO) is nearing completion. Developed to handle the airports current needs as well as those of the future, the program included the construction of a new state-of-the-art international terminal, a light-rail system, new entrance roadways, new parking facilities, a consolidated rental car center, expanded cargo facilities, an on-site BART station and the worlds first fully-accredited airport museum. In many ways, the massive project is as unique as San Francisco itself. Nowhere is that more evident than in the new $993 million International Terminal. A marvel in terms of both its planning and construction, it is the centerpiece of the entire project. Significant portions of both its exterior, as well as the exteriors of the other new structures, were clad with panels fabricated from aluminum composite material by Alusuisse Composites Inc., St. Louis, MO. In total, nearly 600,000 sq. ft. of the material was utilized. With 2.5 million square feet under roof, the International Terminal is the biggest in North America. According to airport officials, it is also among the most technologically advanced, featuring one of the largest common-use environments of any U.S. airport. The common-use system allows different airlines to share ticket counters and gates, thereby enhancing customer service and operating efficiency. Real-time flight, weather and traffic information is available on the airports website, while a wireless ether-net system allows international passengers to remain connected while traveling.
