A Tiger Team developed design and performance specifications for alternative fuel dispenser charge card readers, with the aim of establishing guidelines for developing reliable card systems with accessibility similar to that of conventional fuel systems. While the construction of a new international airport outside of Bangkok has been under discussion for more than two decades, the Thai governments aim to open the new airport in 2004 has given its construction new impetus. Now that site preparation and ground improvements for the first runway are nearly complete, planners are moving ahead with finalization of the terminal design and pre-qualification of construction contractors. A U.S.-led consortium, Murphy/Jahn Tams ACT Associates (MJTA), hired in 1995 to design the passenger terminal, submitted a dramatic 550,000 square meter steel and glass structure designed by Helmut Jahn. While accepted by the New Bangkok International Airport Company (NBIA) Board, controversy has erupted as to whether the 42 billion baht budget (U.S.$ 1.2 billion) target for the passenger terminal and concourse can be met. As a result, the NBIA tender for the general contract to build the terminal is likely to seek bidders not only on the MJTA design, but also on an amended design intended to keep costs in line with the budget. The Royal Thai Governments goal is to develop SBIA as Southeast Asias regional aviation hub. Opinions are divided as to whether two airports will continue in operation with SBIA handling all international and some domestic flights and the current Bangkok International Airport (Don Muang) serving primarily as a domestic airport. By 2006, all scenarios call for SBIA to handle all domestic and international flights. The projected level of first year traffic at the new airport would be between 28 and 31 million passengers, compared to about 25 million current capacity at Don Muang. SBIA would have an initial annual capacity of 30 million passengers with future expansion plans to handle 70 million passengers. The projected cargo-handling capacity at the new airport will be 1.6 million tons per year, or roughly twice the current capacity at Don Muang.

"The feedback from the airlines and the traveling public was that it was a program that everyone was happy with and didn't want to see stop," said Larry Zmuda of Unisys Corp., regarding the pilot project that is using biometric identifiers to screen travelers and speed them through security checkpoints at five U.S. airports. Unisys is one of the prime contractors on the project. But the project also faces a major hurdle if Transportation Security Administration officials decide to make it a national program and expand it to other airports. Currently, participants can use biometric kiosks only at the airports at which they registered. The next step for TSA is to adopt standards to make interoperable systems to allow rapid screening of Registered Traveler participants at all participating airports.

When he came to America, it was originally to be the beginning of a ten year world tour, each year working with a different architect. The first stop was enrolling in a graduate course at the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago, where Mies van der Rohe taught. The latter was, and still is, one of Roche's idols along with Eero Saarinen and Alvar Aalto. It was when his funds ran out that he managed to find a job with Mr. Saarinen's firm in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. His future partner, John Dinkeloo, joined the same company almost at the same time in 1951. From 1954 until Mr. Saarinen's death in 1961, Roche was his principal associate in design.

Almost from the beginning of the English Colonial History of this continent, the crest of the National Airport site has been rich in historic significance. The Gravelly Point site has significance dating back to colonial days. Captain John Alexander built a mansion called "Abingdon" on the site in 1746. A descendent, Philip Alexander, donated most of the land on which the City of Alexandria was built, and it was so named in his honor. The mansion was purchased in 1778 by John Parke Custis, and was the birthplace of Eleanor "Nelly" Parke Custis, stepdaughter of President George Washington. Abingdon was destroyed by fire in 1930 and the ruins stabilized until 1998 when the Airports Authority preserved the site and housed artifacts found there in the Exhibit Hall, located in Terminal A. Airport facilities in Washington, D.C. had long been seriously inadequate early in the 20th Century. Hoover Field, located near the present site of the Pentagon, was the first major terminal to be developed in the Capital area, opening its doors in 1926. The following year, Washington Airport, another privately operated field, began service next door. In 1930, the economics of the Great Depression caused the two terminals to merge to form Washington-Hoover Airport. Bordered on the east by Highway One, with its accompanying high-tension electrical wires, and obstructed by a high smokestack on one approach and a dump nearby, the field was less than adequate. Incredibly, the airport's one runway was intersected by a busy vehicular street, Military Road, which had guards posted to flag down traffic during takeoffs and landings.
