Extractions: WELCOME to the 202 Squadron RAF Search and Rescue helicopters website . The Squadron operates the Sea King HAR Mk3 Search and Rescue (SAR) helicopter from bases at RAF Boulmer (A Flight), RAF Lossiemouth (D Flight) and RAF (det) Leconfield (E Flight). The Squadron headquarters is also based at RAF Boulmer. The Sea King HAR 3 has a crew of 4. There are 2 pilots, a radar operator/winch operator and a winchman who has extended paramedic training. The crew follow a 24 hour shift pattern and hold a readiness state of 15 minutes between the hours of 0800 and 2200. Outside of these hours they hold a readiness of 45 minutes and remain within the Flight building overnight. In addition to the crew, the aircraft has seating for up to 18 passengers and can fly for over 5 hours at maximum fuel loading. The helicopter is routinely operated with Night Vision Goggles (NVG) and is also capable of carrying out an internal radar letdown and flying an automatic transition to the 50ft hover in fog or at night over the water. The primary role of SAR is the recovery of downed military aviators, but in peacetime its aircraft are available all year round for use in civilian distress incidents. Indeed, since 1973, over 95% of the rescues carried out by 202 Sqn have been civilian incidents. In 2001 D Flt marked its 5000th rescue. This was the recovery of a fallen climber in the Highlands of Scotland who had suffered a dislocated shoulder. It was one of 5 rescues that D Flt had been tasked with on that particular day. The rescues carried out over the years have included a wide variety of incidents involving rescuing casualties from: aircraft, fishing trawlers, ferries, oil rigs, mountainous terrain, cliffs and the waters surrounding Scotland.

Extractions: Atmospheric Research Physics Education Research ... Cadet Research ACADEMICS Physics Major Meteorology Major LINKS USAFA Academy Admissions Cool Physics Links Welcome to the United States Air Force Academy Department of Physics web site. Here you can find out all about our Faculty, Students, Courses and Research. The department consists of both civilian and military faculty members who put teaching first but spend some of their time on research, flying and service to the greater institution. Our physics majors share a reputation as competent thinkers and creative problem solvers. Physics majors go on to serve the Air Force as pilots, flight test engineers, acquisition managers, engineers in a wide range of disciplines, nuclear research officers and of course physicists. We typically graduate 20 to 25 physics majors per year. The physics major requires 147 semester hours so we offer a full gamut of advanced courses to help meet that requirement. We also offer two "core" courses taken by all academy students. Our research program enhances both the faculty and cadet experience while getting real work done for the Air Force and Department of Defense.
Extractions: Long before Space Shuttles were lifting off from the Kennedy Space Center, what is now the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station was launching America's rockets. You don't hear too much about Cape Canaveral Air Force Station today, other than the fact that it launches unmanned missions. You'll see it on TV or in the news if the mission is popular (the Mars mission), if disaster strikes (the explosion of a Delta II rocket in 1997), or if the mission is controversial (Cassini). Other than that, most of the general public doesn't get to see Cape Canaveral Air Force Station unless they visit it (usually as a side trip to Kennedy Space Center). Some areas of Cape Canaveral Air Force Station can be seen on the Kennedy Space Center's "Then and Now" bus tour. Other than that, the general public doesn't get to see much of the facility. In 1996, I was given a tour by the director of the Air Force Space & Missile Museum. He spent all day escorting me to the various facilities at the Air Force Station, and patiently watched me burn off roll after roll of film. I set this site up to give a "guided tour" of the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. I've included more than 50 of the better pictures I had taken, and added over 30 from other sources (including historical photos). In 2005, a Mission Flight Controller Officer named Steve Sanders contacted me and offered to help me tell the story of the Cape. Since January of 2005, Steve has generously provided hundreds of photos as well as an insider's view of the Cape, and this website has nearly doubled in size. I hope you enjoy it!
