Extractions: Department of Agronomy Principal Investigator Dr. Elisa Marie D'Angelo Contents (Photograph of a typical bottomland hardwood forest wetland that dominated much of KY prior to the 1800's. At the state and federal levels, there is interest in preserving and recreating these systems to recover lost wetland functions, such as water quality improvement, habitat, and recreation. The SWBL at UK is investigating how well the replacement, or mitigated wetlands, are performing biogeochemical C, N, and P cycling processes compared to "pristine" bottomland hardwood forest wetlands. This information is necessary to properly identify suitable sites, and monitor, and manage mitigated wetlands so that the "No Net Loss" wetland goal can be achieved. Exciting new results!!! Research Aerobic and anaerobic microbial ecology and diversity in the soil-water-rhizosphere environment Microbial transformations of organic and inorganic pollutants Regulators of microbial processes Bioavailability of pollutants and environmental fate Biogeochemical processes affecting water quality in lakes and constructed/natural wetlands Soil bioremediation Research Justification Expanding agricultural and industrial production have significantly improved the socioeconomic status of many Kentuckians. Associated with some of these activities, however, are impeded soil and water quality that impact the health and quality of life for many citizens and the environment. The essence of Biogeochemistry is to gain an understanding of biological and chemical processes that govern the fate of contaminants in the environment, and to use this knowledge to develop solutions to environmental problems.

Forage Establishment: Getting Off To A Good Start For more information on soil testing and fertility see the 2000 agronomy Handbook, in pdf format at http//www.ext.vt.edu/pubs/agronomy/index.html. http://www.ext.vt.edu/pubs/forage/418-120/418-120.html
Extractions: Profitable ruminant livestock production depends on the production of high-quality forages. High yields can only be obtained from a dense, vigorous stand of an adapted forage species. The first step in obtaining such a stand is establishment. The establishment phase of forage production is critical because all other management practices depend upon a healthy sod. Forage establishment begins long before the actual seeding. Successful forage establishment requires careful planning and attention to detail. Control weeds. http://www.ext.vt.edu/pubs/pmg/fc5a.pdf Adjust soil fertility and pH prior to seeding. http://www.ext.vt.edu/pubs/agronomy/index.html Choose an adapted forage species. A forage species must be adapted to the soil conditions in the pasture and the region where it will be grown. If the forage is not regionally adapted, the chance of successfully establishing and maintaining a healthy sod is low. It is also important to select a forage species that is adapted to the desired end use. For example in pastures that are not rotationally grazed, tall fescue is a better choice than orchardgrass. Use certified seed or a proprietary variety that is adapted to your climatic region. This will ensure you are getting high-quality, weed-free seed with adequate germination and minimal dormancy. For more information on adapted species see the 2000 Agronomy Handbook, Virginia Cooperative Extension publication 424-100, which is available in pdf format at

For instance, while conservation agriculture is well established in the Americas, the uptake in Europe has, until recently, been much slower. However, increasing numbers of European farmers are adopting some or all of the principles of conservation tillage. Recent European Conservation Agriculture Federation (ECAF) estimates suggest that the percentage of agricultural land under conservation tillage in the 3 SOWAP countries ( UK, Belgium and Hungary) is 30%, 10% and 10%, respectively. Thus far, uptake of conservation tillage in Europe has mainly been driven by the need to reduce production cost. However, conservation tillage can also deliver a range of environmental benefits that are increasingly being sought by society. A recent review, Holland (2003), listed the primary environmental benefits of conservation tillage as: reduced water runoff and soil erosion, increased carbon sequestration, a richer soil biota and improved food supplies for birds. The increasing emphasis that the EU Commission and member states are placing on environmental protection, e.g.
