Around 1 million people choose to work beyond State Pension Age already. They gain and so does the productive economy. We have made progress, but a lower than average proportion of people over 50 are employed and fewer of them have qualifications. We cannot afford this waste of potential for the individual and for society. Our aspiration is a world-leading 80 per cent overall employment rate, including 1 million more older people in work. If we achieve this, the ratio of workers to non-workers in the economy would be about the same in 2050 as now. Society can grow older, and sustain its economic capacity. We are progressively putting in place the steps to produce fairer employment and more employment in a growing economy.

By the mid-1950s, however, the U.S. Supreme Court had begun to subject laws that discriminate on the basis of a person's race, color, or national origin to strict judicial scrutiny, prohibiting virtually all forms of government-based racial discrimination. Congress, too, began to outlaw public and private racial discrimination in voting, employment, public accommodations, housing, and federally funded programs. Later, the high Court subjected laws based on gender to heightened scrutiny also, while Congress not only banned sex discrimination in a variety of fields but also forbade unequal treatment based on disability.

They represent a national commitment to end discrimination and establish a mandate to bring the excluded into the mainstream. Extractions: Recent Developments in Foreign Public and Private Pensions January 2005 Austria has aligned the provisions of its pay-as-you-go pension systems for federal civil servants, farmers, the self-employed, and others with those for most workers in the private sector. In addition to reducing inequities between future pensioners, the government expects this action to enhance labor mobility by removing distortions generated by different contribution rates and benefit levels across the various systems. The parliament approved the reform legislation on November 24, following months of discussion between the government and the various constituencies. The new provisions modify some of the features of the pension reform legislation passed by the parliament in July 2003 and implemented in July 2004. (See also the August 2004 issue of International Update The new provisions will apply fully to new entrants to the labor force who are under the age of 50 on or after January 1. A mix of the old and new provisions will apply to those with a work history under the old system. All workers will begin receiving an annual account statement beginning in 2007. The full retirement age for men will remain at 65, but it will now be flexible with a "corridor" between the ages of 62 and 68. During this period workers may retire with an annual 4.2 percent reduction in their pension benefit for each year under age 65 or a 4.2 percent increase in the benefit for each year worked after age 65. Women will continue to be allowed to retire at age 55 until 2019, at which time the retirement age will be raised gradually to equal that for men by 2033. Female Genital Cutting How many women and girls in the world have been affected by FGC? In the United States? The age at which FGC is performed on women and girls varies. http://www.4woman.gov/faq/fgc.htm
Extractions: What international efforts exist to stop FGC? Female genital cutting (FGC) is the collective name given to traditional practices that involve the partial or total cutting away of the female external genitalia or other injury to the female genitals, whether for cultural or other non-therapeutic reasons. Historically, it has been also called "female genital mutilation" or "female circumcision." The age at which FGC is performed on women and girls varies. It may be performed during infancy, childhood, marriage or during a first pregnancy. FGC is typically performed on young girls who are between 4 and 12 years old, however, by a medically untrained person-often an older woman-from the local culture or community. Increasingly FGC is also performed by trained health personnel, including physicians, nurses and midwives.
