Extractions: Durham, NC 27708 Collection Description In 1988 it was estimated that Duke Libraries adds about 1000 monographs annually to its collection of approximately 37,000 monographs on Africa (in all fields). Duke also subscribes to about 175 periodicals. This relatively substantial collection grew out of Duke's long-standing interest in the British Commonwealth, which included Eastern and Southern Africa as well as Ghana and Nigeria. The collection is especially strong in history, economic development, political science, public policy, religion, art and music. Based on research and teaching interests in the Romance Studies Department and the Program for Literature, Francophone and English African literature (including English translations) have gained in significance and are now actively collected. By Reinhard Laubenbacher and David Pengelley. Springer, New York, 1999, x + 275 pp. Hardcover: ISBN 0-387-93434-8, $59.95. Paperback: ISBN 0-387-98433-X, $34.95. Most universities require one or two mathematics courses of every student, and for those not in the sciences and engineering, that requirement is generally satisfied by some collection of one-semester courses in calculus, finite mathematics, and logic. We try to include useful stuff in the courses, but we make little effort to give the students any notion of the frontiers of mathematics, the excitement of mathematical discovery, or the beauty of a surprising and elegant proof. Why don't we try to offer a course filled with the excitement of mathematical unknowns and discoveries? Many would say, "The typical non-mathematics freshman is nowhere near ready to see the frontiers of any part of mathematics. It's better to give them something useful." So our former students plod through their lives, never knowing what they have missed. As adults, they tell us at parties, "I liked mathematics, but I have no head for figures," or "I never was good at mathematics." How would they know? They never saw any mathematics, just formulas and algorithms.
