Westport, Connecticut, Greenwood Press, 1995. x, 158 pp., $49.55 U.S. Despite a renewed interest in historiography, books which tackle the broad issues of the practice of professional historical writing and its impact are still rare. The job is always difficult and David Russo deserves credit for asking big questions, and providing some sensible answers. Continue article Advertisement A second area requiring further analysis is the changing nature of audiences for history. Russo bases his lament on the reading of history as fairly conventionally defined. The decline in the general audience for history writing needs to be put alongside the enormous expansion of historical material available in other media, particularly film, TV, and video, but also the internet. Could it not be that the general audience for history has not declined, but changed? Would a writer like Francis Parkman, or Allan Nevins from a much more recent time, be acceptable to a reading public today? Not likely. Their equivalents are probably found in the work of film and documentary producers.
