Extractions: B.A. Degree Requirements Students must complete at least 120 credits to graduate, including at least 30 credits in the major. Students complete 30-36 3xxx, 4xxx, or 5xxx course credits, including a 3xxx, 4xxx, or 5xxx statistics or methods course approved by the undergraduate adviser; sequences in African American history, African history; 12 credits in group concentration and 6 credits outside the concentration; at least 3 credits from a course that examines gender issues; one 4xxx or 5xxx seminar or proseminar; and a senior paper. Students may receive a maximum of 2 credits toward the major for approved domestic or foreign internships. Specific requirements vary depending on selected track. Consult the student handbook of the Department of African American and African Studies for details. Students selecting this major should consult with the undergraduate adviser to establish an approved program. Language Requirements CLA language requirement must be met in one of the following languages: French, German, Dutch, Portuguese, Spanish, Arabic, Swahili.

This year will prove to be a busy and exciting one for museumgoers, particularly those interested in works created by African American artists or those who are interested in themes focusing on the African American experience. The Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen and Abandoned Lands, often referred to as the Freedmen's Bureau, was established in the War Department by an act of March 3, 1865. The Bureau supervised all relief and educational activities relating to refugees and freedmen, including issuing rations, clothing and medicine. The Bureau also assumed custody of confiscated lands or property in the former Confederate States, Border States, District of Columbia, and Indian Territory. This site includes bureau records created or maintained by bureau headquarters, the assistant commissioners and the state superintendents of education and included personnel records and a variety of standard reports concerning bureau programs and conditions in the states.

The political, social, economic, cultural and historical experiences of African Americans, Filipino Americans and communities of color are important dimensions emphasized in the work of the Institute. These paintings are all in the permanent collection of NMAA, and we invite you to visit the Museum in person whenever you are in Washington, DC. The twelve paintings which will be on display here over the next few months were selected by students in the Providence College Program in Black Studies, which provided funding for the necessary licenses and which publishes this website; the staff at NMAA graciously provided the original images; our Providence College Department of Academic Media Services coordinated the scanning process. While on display, you will be able to view each image in three formats: the thumbnails on this page; larger-format versions illustrating the main pages of our site; and for highest-quality viewing, as separate images in high-resolution JPEG format. To load a painting's high resolution (300 dpi) image, click on a thumbnail below. TECHNICAL DETAILS From the Museum's archive of 4 x 5 inch transparencies, we scanned 950-1000 dpi images, in TIFF format. These 45-65 megabyte files were then downsampled to reduce file size and display easily in your Web browser. The smaller versions are 72 dpi JPEG images (medium quality setting), and they should load relatively quickly on most systems. Established in 1969, the Department of African American Studies at Ohio University is one of the oldest programs in the United States. For more than three decades the department has been enriching the educational experience for all students at Ohio University.
