Extractions: Biography Margaret Abigail Walker was born on 7 July 1915 in Birmingham, Alabama. Her parents, the Reverend Sigismund C. Walker, a Methodist minister and an educator, and Marion Dozier Walker, a music teacher, encouraged her to read poetry and philosophy from an early age. Walker completed her high school education at Gilbert Academy in New Orleans, Louisiana, where her family had moved in 1925. She went on to attend New Orleans University (now Dillard University) for two years. Then, after acclaimed poet Langston Hughes recognized her talent and urged her to seek training in the North, she transferred to Northwestern University in Chicago, Illinois, where she received a B.A. in English in 1935, at the age of nineteen. In 1937, she published "For My People" in Poetry magazine. Her first poem to appear in print, it became one of her most famous and was even anthologized in 1941 in The Negro Caravan before becoming the opening poem of her first volume of verse in 1942.

Interest in Hurston and her work has increased dramatically since the 1970's. Each year new critical and scholarly works about Hurston's writing are published. The Zora Neale Hurston Arts and Humanities Festival is held annually in her hometown of Eatonville, Florida. When she died in 1960, she was buried in an unmarked grave in a segregated cemetery. In 1973, Alice Walker, the poet and novelist, traveled to Hurston's grave and paid homage to her by placing a stone marker which read "ZORA NEALE HURSTON 1901-1960 A GENIUS OF THE SOUTH NOVELIST, FOLKLORIST, ANTHROPOLOGIST". Since then literature scholars have studied her work, her novel Their Eyes Were Watching God has become a college classic, and her work is being edited and republished in definitive editions.

Welcome to the world of multicultural therapy. The idea behind multicultural therapy, or "cultural competence," as it is sometimes called, is that human identity is primarily culture-dependent. The theory presumes that if therapist and patient are members of different groups, especially racial groups, they will experience miscommunication and mistrust. The therapist must therefore learn a different set of rules for treating patients of each different race. The notion of treating patients according to their racial or ethnic groups has gained increasing acceptance in recent years. Multicultural therapy pops up regularly on the conference-and-workshop circuit and is the subject of a growing list of scholarly books. It is also an increasing part of mental health training: Only a handful of counseling programs required multicultural counseling courses in the 1970s and early 1980s, but recent surveys have found that 42% to 59% of counseling programs currently require such a course. The American Psychological Association, the American Psychiatric Association (which is meeting this week in New York), and the federal government's Public Health Service have all gotten on the multicultural bandwagon, publishing treatment guidelines for racial and ethnic groups.
