Colleagues who are interested in a more detailed description of the theoretical design of these programs and their impact on student learning should consult my article, "Socrates On-line: A Multimedia Tool for the Development of Critical Thought," in Proteus: A Journal of Ideas. Special issue on Technology in Education (March 1997):13-22. A caveat: I am not a professionally trained programer; on the contrary, I am a history professor who fell in love with educational technology and taught herself everything she knows how to do. Consequently, there are one or two graphics in these programs that do not look as nifty as I wish they did, nor do these modules always work as well on the Internet as they do on a network or in the labs on campus. I do hope users will forgive me an occasional less-than-perfect graphic or experience via a modem connection! These interactive programs are also set up to record the amount of time you spend in the modules, your scores on quizzes, and other information onto a floppy disk. They do

Extractions: Our world has become an increasingly complicated place. We don't know what country will be on the news tonight and how events there will concern us. It is important to know the world and to know about the world before the world comes to us. Consider how much geography the average 16 year old knows and remember they may vote in the next presidential election. The heart of geography, and even the source of its name, is the map - a picture of the world which organizes our understanding of places. Manipulating a map, assembling it, is the best way to learn where the different countries are and what other countries they are near to or far way from. This forms a lasting image and understanding. It is hard to know much of a foreign place without knowing where it is. The map is a framework that brings other knowledge together and makes the world understandable.

It stretches from coast to coast and desert to wetland where rivers cut deep into the continent's substrate of rock and sand. The arc is straddled with conservation areas traversing international boundaries and providing glimpses of animal movement. In addition to the wildlife, ancient cultures thrived using the sheltered bedrock cliffs and alluvial deposits from the meandering rivers. Traces of these societies have given rise to a string of diversely rich ecological and cultural habitats. Protected as national parks and conservation areas by South Africa and the neighboring Southern African Development Community countries to the north such as Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, and the kingdoms of Swaziland and Lesotho, there is now an opportunity to link these ecological and cultural footprints.
