Extractions: A new understanding of its causes is helping to deliver effective treatments BY GABRIELLE BAUER Want to know more about the signs of dyslexia? By the same token, Cohen says, as many as two thirds of children referred to her for behavioural problems such as attention deficit disorder (ADD) actually have a learning disability. Although ADD and dyslexia often occur together, this is not always the case. Children can also become inattentive when they feel frustrated and discouraged about their inability to read and learn. A recent study of 96 Canadian families prone to dyslexia identified a disturbance in a gene at a specific region on chromosome 2 in many of these families, supporting the results of an earlier Norwegian study. And an analysis of dyslexia-prone American and British families has linked an area of chromosome 18 and of chromosome 6 to reading, phoneme-processing and spelling problems. That being said, Berninger and Raskind caution that although there is a genetic basis for difficulty in changing letters in unknown words into speech, the most effective treatment is educational not medical. Explicit instruction that shows readers how alphabet letters are related to speech has been shown to be effective.

Extractions: Learning Problems, Causes and Treatments A learning disability is any physical or mental condition that interferes with learning. Learning disabilities can affect spoken or written language, coordination, self-control and attention. They can create problems with reading, writing, math and social interaction. Learning disabilities become apparent when comparing a child's development with other children of the same age. Since children develop at different rates, it is often difficult to diagnose mild learning problems before a child enters school. If you suspect a learning disorder, it is best to confront it early before the consequences multiply as the child ages. Common signs are delayed communication, regression of communication skills, difficulty interacting with peers, poor ability to follow directions, restless and distracted, unaware of surroundings and prone to accidents. What causes learning disabilities? Some disabilities are given names to help categorize children: aphasia, autism spectrum disorder, attention deficit disorder (ADD), attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), dyslexia. But these names are just labels that describe a range of symptoms. These names do not specify a root cause. Most researchers believe that these named disorders may be caused by a wide variety of genetic factors, infections, chemical imbalances, environmental stresses and so on. As such, any single medical or educational intervention will rate poorly in broad studies of learning disorders. However, specific interventions can have dramatic results for specific children. It is up to parents and teachers to find out what works for a particular individual. Note there are many similarities between disorders and normal behavior, so it is often difficult to classify a child.
Extractions: 'If your gifted child is failing to live up to his or her potential there is a strong chance that they are right-brained and visual and are not well served by the system", says Jeffrey Freed and Leslie Parsons in their book, "The Right-Brained Child in the Left Brained World". These students are often labeled Dyslexic, ADD, ADHD, Attention Deficit Disorder, SLD, Specific Learning Disability, Dysgraphic or Learning Disabled. This helps them qualify for support, but the result is often limited improvement. Why do we call these students 3D Learners? We have found this empowering label enables these talented individuals to make dramatic improvements if they are taught to their strengths, with a positive, empowering and collaborative approach. My name is Mira Halpert, and I have developed the 3D Learner Program with my husband Mark. I have a Masters in Education in early childhood education and teaching the gifted and talented, from the University of Michigan. I have dedicated the last 7 years to developing and implementing the best possible 3D Learner Program for students who are traditionally labeled with Dyslexia, ADD, Attention Deficit Disorder, ADHD, Dysgraphia, SLD and/or Specific Learning Disability. The program was developed for our 2 children who had been labeled with Dyslexia. My daughter, now nineteen years old, had her reading scores improve by over 4 years in seven months. As a high school senior she was able to take several honors classes, get a 4.4 average and earn the Special Education Student of the Year Award. Our 12 year old had his SAT scores improved 31% in reading and 10% in math. His grades improved from C's and B's to Straight A's, including a high-level math program.

Pages : momsdream 01-30-2005, 12:58 PM My almost 7 year old D is in first grade. She is at the bottom of the class for reading. She has struggled all year - first with recognizing letter and sounds - and now with reading. She has been referred to a reading specialist with a group called Elwyn, who helps her a few days a week at school. She isn't really making much progress. At this point, she is ok with sounding out and reading three letter words...but her class has moved into reading chapter books with complex words. She continues to fall farther behind her class and is so insecure about her abilities. Her teacher recognizes the issue and says that I shouldn't even try to get her to do the normal homework and should just do other things that she can do. Thus, at this point I think I need to get very educated about this because it seems that I'll need to teach her to read and maybe change schools. At this pace, I don't see her passing first grade unelss I can figure out what's wrong and correct it. It's really sad because she's a wiz at math! her teacher feels that now she'll begin to lose pace with the math because they are moving into word problems. She can't read the words - so she can't do the problems.

Extractions: Since 1975, the goal of the Dyslexia Research Institute, Inc. has been to change the perception of learning differences, specifically in the area of dyslexia and attention deficit disorders (ADD). With proper recognition and intervention, dyslexics and individuals with ADD become successful individuals using their talents and skills to enrich our society. They may take their place alongside other dyslexics/ADDs, such as Woodrow Wilson, Thomas Edison, Albert Einstein, and Nelson Rockefeller. Ten to fifteen percent of the US population has dyslexia, yet only five out of every one hundred dyslexics are recognized and receive assistance. Approximately 60% of individuals diagnosed with attention deficit disorders are also dyslexic, however, their learning and language differences are often unrecognized because only the behavioral aspects of ADD are addressed. Without the proper diagnosis and help, many of these dyslexics and ADD individuals are only functionally literate, and are part of the forty-four million adults with only the lowest level of literacy. This limits their ability to find jobs and function independently within their communities. The Dyslexia Research Institute mission is to change these statistics by providing appropriate identification and training.

Extractions: First, let me say that, as an adult with ADD, I find it very hard to see this uniqueness we have as a true disability. In the first place, it is hardly a deficit of attention, but more of an overabundance of it. The problem is actually more with the inability to avoid distraction - to ignore the many things that demand our attention while we are trying to focus on one. This is particularly troublsome in the classroom setting, where any disruption is met with stern condemnation, or else becomes too much accepted, leading to the child being ignored. Second, although some of the traits (such as hyper-activity) that can accompany ADD can be troublesome, especially in the schoolroom, and may even require medication to offset the chemical imbalances, I believe most of the differences/difficulties faced with ADD are simply differences in viewpoint. I don't mean opinion, but the basic way we look at the world. I tend to subscribe to the idea that we are

Extractions: "I always knew there was something wrong, but no one would take any notice." Sadly, this is a remark familiar to many teachers and educational psychologists. In a recent Dyslexia Institute survey 7% of parents claimed to have suspected dyslexia in their under fives but didn't know what to do about it. The process of learning begins from the moment of birth. A child will become aware of movement, sound, taste, smell and sight, and link these senses with memory and comprehension. It is linking these senses and developing an awareness of the world and his part in it, that will allow the child to learn and eventually to read and write. A good parent encourages their child at each stage, praises enthusiastically each small step, plays games, tells stories and so helps their child to develop physical and mental capacity. It is best not to assume that your child will automatically make these links and relate to the world outside. If his development seems slow and inconsistent, with no apparent reason, an even more positive effort should be made to extend and explore experiences together. Playgroup leaders and infant teachers can help to assess the learning style of your child; often, with their experience, they can reassure or comment on the child's development.
