[Warning: this page is not actively maintained at the moment and might be out of date.] There are hundreds of different computer languages available, and around two dozen of those are more widely known and supported. However of those, only six are really widely supported on many different platforms by a range of high-quality development tools and are ISO standardized (or about to be) and can therefore be trusted for a long-term investment of work: C , C++, Ada, Pascal, Java, Fortran, COBOL. Fortran is optimized for number crunching and COBOL is a legacy language for systems that caused Y2K troubles. I am very experienced in C and quite experienced in Pascal, but both languages are now rather old and lack support for modern software engineering techniques (object-oriented programming, exception handling, multi-threading, templates, etc.). Other newer languages like C# and D look promising for the future, but there is no support infrastructure available for them yet.

Extractions: U.S. Military Academy The Department of Defense policy that requires the exclusive use of Ada in defense weapons systems has been rescinded. However, because of its robustness and valuable strengths such as strong typing, ease of learning, and compatabilty with object-oriented design techniques, Ada remains the language of choice for systems where human life is at stake. he Ada initiative was undertaken to meet the special software needs of the Department of Defense (DoD). Defense software systems have high assurance and high reliability requirements and are characterized by long procurement times and long lifecycles. None of the recent policy changes have changed DoD software characteristics. A major reason for the development of Ada was the proliferation of high- order programming languages in use by the DoD in the mid-1970s. It is commonly estimated that more than 450 different high-order languages were in use in 1975. As shown in Figure 1, the number of high-order languages in use in the DoD has significantly declined.

These capabilities are also required in many real- time, embedded, distributed, and information systems. The purpose of the Annex is to provide facilities for applications that are required to interface and interact with the outside world (i.e. outside the domain of an Ada program). Examples may be other languages, an operating system, the underlying hardware, devices and I/O channels. Since these kinds of interfaces lie outside the Ada semantic model, it is necessary to resort to low-level, environment specific programming paradigms. Such sections of the application are often implementation dependent and portability concerns are less critical. However, rigid isolation of these components helps in improving the portability of the rest of the application. The application domains of such systems include: real-time embedded computers, I/O drivers, operating systems and run-time systems, multilingual/multicomponent systems, performance-sensitive hardware dependent applications, resource managers, user-defined schedulers, and so on. Made an international standard in 1983 (Ada 83), and revised in 1995 (Ada 95) [ANSI/MIL-STD-1815A-1983; ISO/IEC 8652:1995]. Ada has good support for abstract data types, with some limitations. Ada 95 supports object-oriented programming, albeit in a slightly ugly (unusual) way, and with no support for multiple inheritance. Ada supports modular programming, with a 'generic' facility that rivals C++ 's templates. Ada has language support for multitasking, and a standard way to support distributed programming. Ada is a forgiving language, in that many typical programming errors are caught by the compiler or by the run-time system that would not be caught in this way by other languages. Developing programs in Ada can be relatively rapid, since many bugs can be squashed very rapidly.

We're looking for an interesting idea and good Ada. The judges' decision will be based on originality, utility, quality, style, reusability, readability and good use of Ada features. You can enter existing work or new material written for the contest. We will consider all types of projects: applications, libraries or even incomplete works. If you are building on top of an existing library or other piece of code then your work should be indicated clearly and should predominantly be in Ada; the library you use need not be. The judges will consider the code itself; you should indicate the most interesting parts of your source - about 1K lines - for the judges to examine. If you are targeting a reasonably common computer and using generally available tools, then you are welcome to supply build instructions so the judges can try to execute your code. If your target is portable you may be able to demonstrate the code running. Judging will take place in January and February. To help plan the work of the judges we'd like you to register your interest in advance. The competition is open to everyone. Entries must be submitted in one of English, French, Dutch or German.
