Extractions: May 6, 2003 I also teach more historical, theoretical classes such as the ACE Interdisciplinary Theory Seminars. The one right now is called Embodied Cognition in Digital Cultures. That's a radically cross-disciplinary, theoretical engagement with different disciplines on the subject of embodiment with respect to technology. We look at robotics, cognitive science, situated anthropology, the history of technology, phenomenological critiques of technology, a whole range of different approaches, and we attempt to stitch it all together. In fact it's an indication of how timely the program is that a number of the applicants already have graduate degrees, but are choosing to come and do the ACE program in addition, or they have established professional careers in the area before they come here. We're bringing together three schools that usually seldom talk to each other. According to the disciplinary structure of liberal arts universities, engineering and the fine arts are at opposite ends of the spectrum and that's actually replicated in the architecture of this campus. Engineering and fine arts are diametrically opposite, as far from each other as you can get. This circular plan is a great metaphor, like a compass. If engineering is north, then the fine arts is south. That was

Founded on the East Coast in 1994, ACE is an after-school mentoring program that offers students the opportunity to work with professional staff members from leading architecture, construction and engineering firms. The mentor companies join into teams and adopt a group of 20 to 25 high school students for the duration of a school year. For the first part of the program, each mentor discusses their roles, responsibilities and how their discipline interrelates with others on a construction project. How have CTCs managed to surmount the myriad of obstacles which are beyond their control and create relevant programming? Even the most prepared programs meet with surprises, and a CTC should be able to constantly assess the needs of its community and modify its program accordingly while remaining true to its mission. The Youth Policy Institute offers their story as an example of the necessity of flexibility when running a CTC program. The Youth Policy Institute (YPI) is familiar with the complex world of education and technology. YPI has over 20 years of experience managing education, technology, and training programs nationwide. They have helped raise more than $16 million for technology, education, and workforce development programs over the past 5 years.
Extractions: ACE North Coast On 8 December 2004 Lynne Smith and Barbara Lachlan were presented with the 2004 Award for Excellent Service to Public Education and Training by Mr Andrew Cappie-Wood, Director-General of Education and Training. By providing a drop-in environment for the whole family the ACE Centre attracts people first by providing a welcoming non-judgemental environment where many start with getting informal assistance on a wide range of issues, trust is built and opportunities for learning are offered. Learning may take the form of informal literacy support by helping fill in forms and then slowly move into reading and writing assistance. Commonly this leads to more formal assistance such as providing the Certificate 1 in General Education for Adults or accredited vocational courses. Most popular of these courses are in business, information technology and accredited arts and crafts. So successful has been the arts and crafts courses that the students are now supplying Aboriginal crafts to local businesses, child care centres and tourist outlets. Negotiations are also underway for a contract to supply Aboriginal arts overseas. Many of the students involved in this venture, came to the Casino Centre with poor literacy skills. With the encouragement of Lynne and Barbara they are now gaining new skills and establishing exciting new business opportunities.

Extractions: There are two fundamental outcomes for all ACE students. The first is that the student learns to become self -reliant. This means the student understands his or her strengths and limits, and upon leaving school understands how his or her learning might apply towards future growth. The second is that the student gains a degree of self-realization which can lead him or her to become an active citizen, an effective worker, and a capable family and community member. It is important that ACE students be given many opportunities to make choices within the context of school. These choices need to reflect all areas of the students' lives and include areas such as: academic programming, career choices, moral dilemma, personal social/behavioral issues, and all matters related to the rules which govern our lives.

Extractions: Welcome mat of programs greets class of 2001 What's up at NMSU this fall? Enrollment for one thing, especially among new freshmen. Occupancy in residence halls is up, too. And so is the number of activities meant to welcome new students to the university. All in all, the changes have revitalized campus life. "It's not just one thing - it's a lot of things coming together," said Missy Giacomelli, assistant director of housing and residence life. The 2.2 percent increase in enrollment at the main campus, to 15,067 students, is due in part to new scholarship packages that allow many New Mexico students to enroll tuition-free, in-state tuition rates for El Paso-area residents, and more marketing to raise awareness of programs offered at NMSU, said Vice President for Administration Juan N. Franco. The number of first-time freshmen increased by nearly 12 percent and undergraduate transfers were up more than 9 percent. Hispanic student enrollment rose to 36 percent of the total student population, and overall minority enrollment accounts for 42 percent of the total. Among first-time freshmen, Franco said, there is no "majority" ethnic group. "We truly have a multicultural campus," he said. New students this fall could take advantage of several new programs designed to help them adjust to university life. The ACE (Achieve, Connect, Enrich) mentorship program entered its second year and two new organizations were introduced - Freshman Council and Chile Seeds.
