The project comprises twenty per cent of the grade for Sociology 211. a. Report on media and ethnicity If you select this option, your task is to prepare a report concerning media treatment of an issue or issues related to ethnicity or multiculturalism. Any one or more of print (newspapers or magazines), radio, television, film, or video could be form of media you examine. Choose an issue, program, or set of advertisements early in the semester and follow this through the semester, keeping notes or records of what you see, read, and hear. Near the end of the semester, write a summary report of seven to ten pages describing the issue and analyzing how the media have dealt with the issue. If you have extra materials such as tables, detailed notes on programs, or clippings, these could be added as an appendix in addition to the seven to ten pages. Use the concepts and discussion in the two texts as a guide to analyzing the issue.

E-mail This Page Change Text Size Ruth Panofsky of Ryersonâs Department of English recently was awarded a Professional Writers Grant in the amount of $20,000 by the Canada Council for the Arts. The grant will help her fund her current project, a biography of Canadian writer Adele Wiseman. The biography will explore the life and work of the author of The Sacrifice (1956) and Crackpot (1974). Panofsky's biography will build on her previous publications, Adele Wiseman: An Annotated Bibliography (1992) and Selected Letters of Margaret Laurence and Adele Wiseman (co-edited with John Lennox, 1977). In addition to the above scholarship on Wiseman, Panofskyâs earlier scholarship on Thomas Chandler, Mazo de la Roche, and Margaret Laurence will be incorporated in a collection of essays on the composition, publication, and rise of popular Canadian fiction. Beginning with Haliburton, the volume will describe the shifting historical, economic, and cultural contexts which have made ir possible for Canadian writers to partake of an international , popular market for their writing. The proposed volume will include essays on: Thomas Chandler Haliburton; Stephen Leacock; Lucy Maud Montgomery; Mazo de la Roche; Robertson Davies; Margaret Laurence; Timothy Findley; Alice Munro; Carl Shields; Margaret Atwood; and Michael Ondaatje. Ruth Panofsky has recently been appointed to a tenure-track position in the Department of English, Ryerson Polytechnic University.
