Copies of these applications may be obtained from The Tennessee State Library and Archives. Tennessee passed a law in 1891 that set up a Board of Pension Examiners. This board decided if the applicant was incapable of "making a support" and if his service was honorable. Confederate pensions were granted to former soldiers that resided in Tennessee rather than the state from which they served. Therefore, there are many soldiers who served from other states. Extractions: The Boss of the Blues: Joe Turner Sings Kansas City Jazz . A sequel of sorts, Big Joe Rides Again , appeared in 1960. In the Sixties, after the first wave of rock and roll had died down, Turner returned to blues and boogie-woogie. He moved to Los Angeles, where he recorded with jazz legends like Dizzy Gillespie, Count Basie and Roy Eldridge for some well-received albums on the Pablo label. He also schooled a young backup band that eventually became the Blasters. The 1983 album Blues Train , on which he was backed by Roomful of Blues and produced by Doc Pomus , was a late-career gem. Having outlasting trends until his sound had became timeless, Big Joe Turner continued to record and perform until his death in 1985. May 18, 1911: Big Joe Turner is born in Kansas City, Missouri.

Extractions: Originally conceived as a folksong in early Colonial Texas history, the first recorded copy of the "Yellow Rose of Texas" was handwritten on a piece of plain paper circa 1836. Historical records indicate this copy was most probably transcribed either shortly before or just after General Sam Houston lead his brigade of Texas loyalists against the army of General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna at the Battle of San Jacinto on April 21, 1836. The folksong's lyrics [see Lyrics] tell of a black American (presumably a soldier) who left his sweetheart (a "yellow rose") and yearns to return to her side. "Yellow" was a term given to Americans of mixed race in those days - most commonly mulattos. And "Rose" was a popular feminine nineteenth century name; frequently used in songs and poems as a symbolic glorification of young womanhood. [Turner]
