Extractions: Easton Press Information The Easton Press has been publishing fine quality leatherbound books for almost 30 years, using 22kt gold stamping on the covers, fine endpapers and sewn-in satin bookmarks. Although they offer a few series, most of their books are far-ranging in interest and topic, much more diversified than Franklin Library was. Many of their older books have increased tremendously in value, while others languish at about half the original price. Most of their series books tend to hold or increase in value, especially the two signed first edition series - Signed First Editions and Signed First Editions of Science Fiction , which are issued in limited numbers, usually between 1,000 and 1,500 each. Their Signed Modern Classics Another series of note is the Masterpieces of Science Fiction, which includes about one signed book for every 10 unsigned ones. While containing some very nice titles, this series is a mish-mash in that titles are often removed from the series and others substituted, including the signed titles (my list below is simply the latest version, subject to change). Nevertheless, the signed titles do very well on the secondary market and even the unsigned ones are in demand, if in Fine condition. The Library of the Presidents , another popular series, is now down to only three signed titles (Presidents Carter, Ford and Bush), making the previous signed offerings by Nixon and Reagan even more valuable. The unsigned editions do not tend to do well by themselves, but a complete collection commands a good price.

Extractions: Joan Slonczewski received her Ph.D. from Yale University after graduating magna cum laude from Bryn Mawr College in 1977. She is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biology at Kenyon College and was the Chair of Biology from 1993-6. Before that, she was a Visiting Associate Professor at U. Maryland at Baltimore, and a Visiting Professor at Princeton University. Joan Slonczewski Website Advertisement Brain Plague , the latest novel from Joan Slonczewski, continues the story of the fictional universe she first created in A Door into Ocean Daughter of Elysium , and The Children Star . The intelligent micro-organisms that were introduced in 1998's The Children Star are spreading through the human population of Valedon. Each colony of micro-organisms has its own culture and talents; some are artists, some mathematicians, some accountants, etc. Some of them are malevolent, turning their human hosts into pleasure seeking vampires who slowly lose their free will to the microbes. These are the brain plague of the title. Chrysoberyl is a young artist, struggling to mount an exhibition and pay her rent at the same time. In addition, her family cannot afford the medical help her brother needs. When she signs up for an experimental program, she becomes host to a microbe colony known as the Eleutherians. Her status as a carrier is her ticket to wealth, fame, and the upper middle class, but it also exposes her to the growing prejudice against the brain plague and its human hosts.
Extractions: aftermath The aftermath: ... Web sites First the flash, then the blast, chaos and death. Why in the world would anyone, including a young adult, be drawn to reading apocalyptic fiction? I started this bibliography partly for selfish reasons. I have long been drawn to books about nuclear war, surviving plagues and other natural and manmade disasters. For awhile I attributed my interest to my being the daughter of a WWII refugee, who survived some horrendous real-life holocausts of recent times. Call it survival guilt or just a quest to try to feel what my mother must have felt in catastrophic situations, but the apocalyptic novel has always held a morbid fascination for me. What would make these books fascinating for young adults? I believe that the common themes of these novels (and films) are particularly attractive to young people who may be feeling set apart from society, or even blamed (individually or as a group) by that society for gang violence, academic dysfunction, "inappropriate" sexuality, and contributing to the general chaos of today's world. Books about chaos can be intriguing for those who are in a chaotic place - especially books that lay the blame for complete social destruction on society itself. Most of the books in this bibliography deal with thought-provoking themes and most are not "light" reading. These books deliver a strong message about the precariousness of our lives. Often they portray the lone survivor who must go on a journey not only to discover the level of destruction that has been wrought, but also to discover something spiritual about themselves and their completely altered reality. These characters survey the world carefully, taking mental notes on how best to construct a survival community and make the best of an abominable situation. Examples of such books are
