Also buried here is John Donne (See map...ref. no 5) In 1586 Sidney took part in a skirmish against the Spanish at Zutphen in the Netherlands and received a musket wound that shattered his thighbone. 22 days later he died from the wound. It is reported that on his death bed he refused a cup of water - even though he had a burning thirst - sending it instead to a dying soldier who lay near by, saying: "Thy necessity is yet greater than mine." He was honoured with a state funeral. Sidney adapted the Petrarchan sonnet and used it in Astrophel and Stella to write t he first ever sonnet sequence in English.

His father, Sir Henry Sidney (1529-1586), was three times lord deputy of Ireland , and in 1560 became lord president of Wales Philip Sidney's childhood was spent at Penshurst; and before he had completed his tenth year he was nominated by his father lay rector of Whitford, Flintshire. A deputy was appointed, and Philip enjoyed the revenue of the benefice for the rest of his life. On the 17th of October 1564 he was entered at Shrewsbury school, not far from his father's official residence at Ludlow Castle , on the same day with his life-long friend and first biographer, Fulke Greville. An affectionate letter of advice from his father and mother, written about 1565, was preserved and printed in 1591 ( A Very Godly Letter. ..). In 1568 Sidney was sent to Christ Church, Oxford , where he formed lasting friendships with Richard Hakluyt and William Camden . But his chief companion was Fulke Greville, who had gone to Broadgates Hall (Pembroke College).     Extractions: By Donna The names Astrophil and Stella mean Star-lover and Star, suggesting the impossibility of their union because of the distance between them The sixteenth century was a time of scientific, historical, archaeological, religious and artistic exploration. More attention was being allotted to probing into the depths of the human psyche and it was up to the artists and poets rather than the priests and scholars to examine and mirror these internal landscapes. The 'little world of man' [1] was reflected through various artistic forms, one of which was the sonnet, which was conventionally used for dedications, moral epigrams and the like. Traditionally most sonnets dealt with the theme of romantic love and in general the sonneteer dealt with the over-riding concern of the self and the other, the latter of which normally referred to a mistress, friend, or a familial relation. One of the first important artistic creations witnessed by the Elizabethans was Sidney's sonnet sequence called Astrophil and Stella , a variation on Petrarch's Canzoniere . Sidney who was indeed acclaimed the 'English Petrarch', nevertheless wrote with his Elizabethan readers in mind as his characters spoke in English accents, voiced English concerns and evoked the spirit of the time.
