Saroyan was the son of Armenian immigrants.The Family is from Bitlis - Anatolia. His father, a small vineyard owner who had been educated as a Presbyterian minister, was eventually forced to take farm-laboring work. He moved to New Jersey in 1905 and died in 1911. At the age of four, William Saroyan was placed in the Fred Finch Orphanage in Oakland, California, together with his brother and sister, an experience he later described in his writing. Five years later, the family reunited in Fresno, where his mother, Takoohi, had obtained work in a cannery.

Saroyan worked tirelessly to perfect a prose style, that was full of zest of for life and was seemingly impressionistic. The style became known as 'Saroyanesque.' William Saroyan was born in Fresno, California, as the son of an Armenian immigrant. His father moved to New Jersey in 1905 - he was a small vineyard owner, who had been educated as a Presbyterian minister. In the new country he was forced to take farm-labouring work. He died in 1911 from peritonitis, after drinking a forbidden glass of water given by his wife, Takoohi. Saroyan was put in an orphanage in Alameda with his brothers. Six years later the family reunited in Fresno, where Takoohi had obtained work in a cannery. In 1921 Saroyan attended the Technical School in order to learn to type. At the age of fifteen, Saroyan left the school. His mother had showed him some of his fathers writings, and he decided to become a writer. Saroyan continued his education by reading and writing on his own, and supporting himself by odd jobs. At the San Francisco Telegraph Company he worked as an office manager. He worked as a telegraph messenger, newsboy, farm laborer, and office clerk, and he drew from these experiences to write short stories, novels, and plays. His first publication, the story "The Daring Young Man on the Flying Trapeze" (1934), began a successful writing career. Five years later, his play The Time of Your Life won the Pulitzer Prize. He refused to accept the award, however. He believed that businesses should not support the arts (the Pulitzer Prize was established by Joseph Pulitzer, a newspaper publisher) and that the play was "no more great or good than anything else I have written." Then, after five years of being raised in an orphanage, the Saroyan children were reunited with their mother, and Mrs. Saroyan was able to re-establish the family in Fresno. W illiam attended school until he was fifteen, when he left high school to try his luck out in the world. He took on odd jobs, and began to write, hoping to get his work published. His work was not an immediate thundering success. Some of his poems and a few short stories did get published, but his genuine breakthrough came when The Daring Young Man on the Flying Trapeze was published in 1934. This is the work that catapulted Saroyan into the spotlight, and really made him an overnight success. From that point on, Saroyan was able to write and be published, and he continued to please his widespread audience. During the course of his life, Saroyan produced more than sixty books. Many of his works were based on autobiographical themes; others explored the world of Armenian immigrants, and the themes of freedom, brotherly love, and hope and poverty during the Great Depression.
