Economist's View: Kenneth Rogoff: High Noon At The IMF Kenneth rogoff is worried that attempts by Asian and emerging market countries to .. In Search of Explanations for Everyday Enigmas, by robert H. Frank http://economistsview.typepad.com/economistsview/2007/10/kenneth-rogoff-.html
Extractions: Main Kenneth Rogoff is worried that attempts by Asian and emerging market countries to resist appreciation of their currencies against the dollar will force all the adjustment onto flexible currencies such as the euro, and this could have disastrous consequences for world trade and the world economy. He believes a new currency agreement is needed to avert a crisis, but, unfortunately, problems at the IMF have undermined its ability to step in and broker an agreement that might lower the chance of problems. But we can always hope this time will be different: High noon at the IMF, by Kenneth Rogoff, Project Syndicate : This month's International Monetary Fund (IMF) meetings in Washington will bring together the world's top finance ministers and central bankers at a critical juncture for the global economy. For starters, the roof is starting to collapse on the global housing bubble... Moreover, money markets, especially in Europe, remain traumatised by the festering global credit crunch. Record-high food and energy prices, combined with sharply rising wages in China, are pushing up inflation in much of the world. Last, but not least, the US productivity boom is decelerating. These combined pressures will make it far more difficult for central banks to sustain the so-called "Goldilocks" economy ("just right" inflation and growth). At the same time, the outside world will be looking especially carefully at what, if anything, officials plan to do if the dollar continues to sink...
Extractions: Conceptual artists who have been involved with 'institutional critique' of the museum and the spaces of display have made us conscious of the numerous powers and forces at play within the fields of display. Other, more performative practices, have alerted us to the sites of display as producing new sensibilities and new modes of knowing. Having absorbed so much of these interventions, we have de facto become an extremely active mode of audience, no longer lost in contemplation of aesthetic objects. On the occasion of Louise Lawler's exhibition at Monika Spr¼th Philomene Magers London, Rogoff will talk about the path we have taken in becoming this active mode of audience and about the works that have heightened our consciousness as such. Irit Rogoff is Professor of Visual Cultures at Goldsmith's College. Her academic interests include critical and post-colonial theory and issues of gender in contemporary art practice. Extractions: From the November 01, 2001 issue of CRN Microsoft's partner program is undergoing a major reorganization that calls for the departure of channel chief Ian Rogoff and the appointment of Rosa Garcia to fill his shoes, at least partly. As part of the reorganization, Microsoft is calling for a more decentralized partner program for its new solutions-selling model, said Charles Stevens, vice president of the Microsoft's Enterprise and Partner Group, in an hour long interview with CRN on Wednesday night. Rogoff, who was named vice president of Microsoft's Worldwide Partner Group in March of 2000, is expected to take another position at Microsoft but his new assignment was not disclosed. Rogoff had been on sabbatical for the last several months. His absence has been highly visible in recent weeks following major conflict between solution providers with the company's growing Microsoft Consulting Services arm. Stevens said the global partner title also goes away as part of this reorganization, which includes the appointment of partner chiefs for distinct partner and customer segments. Rather than having one channel chief to oversee Microsoft's partner program, for example, there will be chiefs for each partner segment: enterprise partners, OEMs, developers and small-to-medium sized business partners.
