His novel A Disaffection was shortlisted for the Booker Prize and won the James Tait Black Memorial Prize for Fiction in 1989. Kelman won the 1994 Booker Prize with How late it was, how late and aroused something of a controversy in doing so: one of the judges, Rabbi Julia Neuberger , called the book 'a disgrace' when it was announced that Kelman had won. In 1998 Kelman was awarded the Scotland on Sunday Glenfiddich Spirit of Scotland Award. During the 1970s he published a first collection of short stories. He became involved in Philip Hobsbaum 's creative writing group in Glasgow along with Tom Leonard Alasdair Gray and Liz Lochhead , and his short stories began to appear in magazines. These stories introduced a distinctive style, expressing first person internal monologues in a pared-down prose utilising vernacular Glaswegian speech patterns , though avoiding for the most part the quasi-phonetic rendition of Tom Leonard. More than what I was experiencing right at that very moment? What would it matter if I didnt see her? What would it matter if I never saw her again in my whole life? Plus if every single friend she ever had, if every one was a lover? What would it matter? I stopped walking and bowed my head, I was smiling at a certain thought, it always made me smile. I glanced up and for a moment my face was straight but then I chuckled and shook my head. I carried on walking. But it was definitely funny how it happened. How it crept up. Not like a bolt from the blue. That is one thing it wasnt because it was gradual, a really gradual thing; and when it arrived it was all-embracing.

He had previously worked in Govan driving buses and had originally undertaken a six-year apprenticeship as a compositor, from which he developed an interest for the way words look on the page. In 1971 Kelman joined a non-selective creative writing evening class directed by Philip Hobsbaum, who later introduced him to Alasdair Gray, Tom Leonard, Liz Lochead and Agnes Owens. Not not while the giro was published in 1983, followed in the next two years by the novels The Busconductor Hines and A Chancer Greyhound for Breakfast won the 1987 Cheltenham Prize, and A Disaffection was awarded the James Tait Black Memorial Prize and shortlisted for the Booker Prize, which he finally received in 1994 for How late it was, how late Em Hene! (We Exist!) in the Kurdistan Report , the Amnesty International journal, Scottish Socialist Voice and the Scottish Trade Union Review . He prefaces his latest novel

He left school at the age of fifteen to undertake a six-year apprenticeship in the printing industry. Having also worked in Govan, driving buses, he began to write when he worked in the Barbican Centre, in London. In 1971 Kelman joined a creative writing evening class under the direction of Philip Hobsbaum. It was here that he met Alasdair Gray (b.1934) and Tom Leonard (b.1944), whose work would later appear alongside his own. His collection of short stories, An Old Pub Near the Angel , was published in Maine, USA in 1973. His first novel, The Busconductor Hines was published in 1984. The depiction of working-class life in Scotland and the use of local vernacular became a characteristic feature of his work. Later work received much critical acclaim and he won the Cheltenham Prize (1987) for Greyhound for Breakfast and the James Tait Black Memorial Prize for A Disaffection (1989) , which was also short-listed for the Booker Prize.
