Z Shirley Jackson Biography Shirley Jackson (December 14, 1919 - August 8, 1965) was an american author who wrote short stories and novels. Her most famous work is her short story "The Lottery", which combines a bucolic small-town-America setting with a horrific shock ending. The tone of most of her works is odd and macabre, with an impending sense of doom, often framed by very ordinary settings and characters. In addition to her novels, Jackson also wrote a children's novel, Nine Magic Wishes, available in an edition illustrated by her grandson Miles Hyman. She also wrote two humorous memoirs, Raising Demons and Life Among the Savages, about her marriage and the experience of bringing up four children. After her death, her husband released her final unfinished novel, Come Along With Me, containing several chapters of her final work as well as several rare short stories and three speeches given by Jackson in her writing seminars.

Former Commissioners Printable Version The Honorable Dr. Shirley Ann Jackson, Chairman of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), is a theoretical physicist. Dr. Jackson was nominated to the Commission and designated to become Chairman by President Bill Clinton. After confirmation by the U.S. Senate, she was sworn in as a Commissioner on May 2, 1995, and assumed the Chairmanship two months later, on July 1, 1995. Prior to joining the NRC, Dr. Jackson was a university professor, research scientist, consultant and corporate director. The Chairman is the principal executive officer of and the official spokesman for the NRC, as mandated by the Reorganization Plan No. 1 of 1980. As principal executive officer, the Chairman is responsible for conducting the administrative, organizational, long-range planning, budgetary, and certain personnel functions of the agency. She has ultimate authority for all NRC functions pertaining to an emergency involving an NRC licensee. Her actions are governed by the general policies of the Commission. A native of Washington, D.C., Dr. Jackson graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1964, as class valedictorian. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in physics in 1968 and a Ph.D. in the field of theoretical elementary particle physics in 1973, both from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

It is this attitude that has resulted in her being labeled 'the first' to do something a seemingly endless number of times. She was the first black woman to earn a Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), the first black female American to earn a physics doctorate, the first black woman to be the president of a national science and engineering institute, and many other firsts. But what it took to get her to where she is today was not just demonstrating her abilities, but overcoming the challenge of all those people who wanted to see her fail. Born on August 5 th Once she got to MIT, however, she found that she was in an environment that was not entirely accepting of her because of the color of her skin. Some students would not sit next to her in class, she was sometimes shouted at and spat upon while walking on the street, she wasn't welcomed to study in study groups, and she wasn't taken seriously by her professors. But Shirley Ann knew she could succeed and she knew that because she was in the spotlight, her successes would be magnified along with her failures. If she ever did fail though, it was a rarity and soon everyone was aware of her ability and many came back, looking to her for help. And rather than laughing at them and being spiteful, she welcomed them and helped them with their work. She turned her enemies into her friends.

The people of the village began to gather in the square, between the post office and the bank, around ten o'clock; in some towns there were so many people that the lottery took two days and had to be started on June 2th. but in this village, where there were only about three hundred people, the whole lottery took less than two hours, so it could begin at ten o'clock in the morning and still be through in time to allow the villagers to get home for noon dinner. The children assembled first, of course. School was recently over for the summer, and the feeling of liberty sat uneasily on most of them; they tended to gather together quietly for a while before they broke into boisterous play. and their talk was still of the classroom and the teacher, of books and reprimands. Bobby Martin had already stuffed his pockets full of stones, and the other boys soon followed his example, selecting the smoothest and roundest stones; Bobby and Harry Jones and Dickie Delacroix the villagers pronounced this name "Dellacroy"eventually made a great pile of stones in one corner of the square and guarded it against the raids of the other boys. The girls stood aside, talking among themselves, looking over their shoulders at rolled in the dust or clung to the hands of their older brothers or sisters.
