Critics sometimes faulted him for dwelling on negative aspects of the African American experience. But in much of Hughes' work, there is an optimism rising above unpleasant realities: "I am the darker brother, / They send me to eat in the Kitchen / When company comes. / But I laugh . . . and grow strong." This photograph was the work of Carl Van Vechten, who was among the first members of the white literary establishment to recognize the cultural importance of the Harlem Renaissance. Extractions: Fort Pitt Elementary School Rationale Objective This unit was conceived from that goal. The objective is to raise achievement by raising interest and participation. If students remain actively engaged in reading, and respond to that reading through writing and discussion, their skill level will increase. Overview This curriculum unit is designed as an author study of Langston Hughes and a genre study of Poetry. The reading level and activities are geared toward intermediate primary or middle school (4 th through 8 th Grades ). A Literacy Block that allows time for writing and reading instruction is recommended. The Language Arts instruction is designed in a two and a half-hour block. During this Literacy Block students engage in word study (phonics, Spelling and grammar), group/individual reading, oral reading, pair reading, author study, genre study, and writing instruction. Writer’s Workshop consists of a mini-lesson, student writing time and share time. Students utilize a writer’s notebook and folder to collect their writing. The mini lesson is designed to enable students to use their own writing as practice for grammar and craft. Through their writer’s notebook and folder, students continually revisit their own work. When a new skill such as "repetition" or "strong beginnings" is introduced in the mini lesson students can use their own work as the blueprint. They can examine their pieces and identify the need for revision, using the mini lesson as their focus.

His parents divorced when he was a child, and his father moved to Mexico. he was raised by his grandmother until he was thirteen, when he moved to Lincoln, Illinois, to live with his mother and her husband, eventually settling in Cleveland, Ohio. It was in Lincoln that Hughes began writing poetry. Following graduation from high school, Hughes spent a year in Mexico and a year at Columbia university. During these years, he held odd jobs as an assistant cook, launderer, and a busboy, and traveled to Africa and Europe working as a seaman. in November 1924, he moved to Washington, D.C. Hughes first book of Poetry, The Weary Blues, was published by Alfred A Knopf in 1926. he finished his college education at Lincoln University in Pennsylvania three years later. in 1930 his first novel, Not Without laughter, won the Harmon gold medal for literature.

His mother was a school teacher and poet while his father, James Nathaniel Hughes, was a shopkeeper. After his parents separated his mother migrated from city to city looking for work, dragging young Langston behind to such places as Mexico, Colorado, Kansas, Indiana and New York. He also lived part of the time with his grandmother, Mary Langston. At the age of 13, Langston Hughes moved back in with his mother and her second husband. They moved to Cleveland, Ohio where young Langston would discover the free verse of Carl Sandburg, who would become an influence. Other early influences included Walt Whitman, Paul Lawrence Dunbar and Claude McKay. Due to his early development in writing style, his eighth grade class elected him as their class poet.
