JS Hawes makes every effort to immerse her readers into life in Italy so long ago. She is a painter herself, so descriptions of techniques (such as creating the vanishing point in a drawing) are carefully presented. This story is unique and will need librarians and teachers to introduce it to students, especially those who love painting and have an appreciation of women's history. JS To quote the review of the hardcover in KLIATT, September 2004: This fine historical fiction falls into the category of a well-written novel that might not find many readers. It is based on the life of the painter Lavinia Fontana, who lived more than 400 years agoher art made her famous throughout Italy and Europe even though she was a woman. Her father taught her to paint, and her husband, also an artist, supported her talent and allowed her to pursue her dreams. The Vanishing Point | Business Solutions From AllBusiness.com By hawes, louise Publication Kirkus Reviews Date Wednesday, September 1 2004. Lavinia Fontana, daughter of the painter Prospero Fontana, http://www.allbusiness.com/retail-trade/miscellaneous-retail-miscellaneous/48473
Extractions: Lavinia Fontana, daughter of the painter Prospero Fontana, made lush Renaissance paintings that were sought after in 16th-century Italy. Hawes takes what is known of her life and creates a fictionalized tale of a complicated adolescence. Vini, as Hawes calls her, enlists one of her father's apprentices to filch paper and chalk for her, as she needs to draw like she needs food or air. Her pompous father google_ad_client = 'pub-2905054723170537'; // substitute your client_id (pub-#) google_ad_channel = '8574857368'; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '3'; google_ad_type = 'text'; google_feedback = 'on'; is dismissive of her and of her fragile mother, and it takes half of the story for Vini to confront him with her longing to be an artist and how she has worked to learn her craft. Hawes writes in the present tense, constructing it with an awkward dream sequence about a puppet theatre intersecting the text. That said, it has romance, pathos, and rather a lot about Renaissance painting techniques and methods of study. Flawed but vivid. (Historical fiction. 12+) In addition, make sure to read these articles:

From the catalog copy: "In lush, glowing prose, Louise Hawes's historical novel draws readers into the life and art of sixteenth-century Bologna with a compelling account of Lavinia Fontana, arguably the most famous female painter of the Italian Renaissance. Here readers will find a coming-of-age story filled with quest, complication, and catastrophe as well as miracles and hope. Although the novel is set four hundred years ago, the hard choices it involves speak to all times, all places, and are sure to tap into readers' own conflicts between head and heart, real life and dreams." Ages 12-up. When I talk to a group about the genesis of The Vanishing Point, a lot of folks expect a dusty lecture on art history. What they get instead is a love story , and a juicy one at that! Like anyone who's fallen hard and fast, I remember all the details: six years ago, on a trip to visit my dad, who still lives where I grew up near Washington, D.C., I heard about a one-woman show at the National Gallery of Women in the Arts. All curious and innocent, I got in my car and drove downtown; still unsuspecting, I went inside and had a look around. ZAPPO! WHAMMO! I was a goner...

A few ground rules: these are not necessarily the most aesthetically pleasing books of the year, nor are they necessarily the books that win awards and medals. The books on this list are the useful but not flashy books; the storytime books, the homework books, the "oh I know just how I'm going to use that book" sort of books. To make this list a title has to be practical, useful, and give the best-bang-for-their-buck. As of September 2004, no further "Best Books" lists will be created. Instead, check out the Bulletin Blue Ribbons and Rs and Stars (R and R*) for a fairly complete list of the books worth buying for any given year. Adler, David.
