The other day I'm lying on the lounge just thinking about, um, love and that... and playing with the rubber band off my silverbeet when I spot two March flies having a rest on a window pane across the room. Now, I respect all life - that's why I only wear leather from dead animals - but such is the distraction of pondering emotional entanglement, I took aim at the poor insect couple, unconscious of my actions, and stretched the rubber band over my thumb. Without thinking (or rather, thinking about love and that...), I somehow calculated for trajectory angles, wind drift, probably even continental drift - I don't know - but it was a perfect shot. I took out one of the Marchies with such pinpoint force that the it just disappeared into nothingess and the remaining Marchie was so stunned it just stood there. I'd traumatised it. I didn't feel good about it. Sure brilliant shot and, you know, I admit I did feel superior for a bit, (and it is my window) but even when I'm a bit insecure I don't really need to prove myself againt a March fly. Surely.

The term "Bush" came into common usage many years ago in Australia, but similar rhymed verse usually in ballad form, has sprung up around the globe particularly in the New World where European settlement has occurred in the last four centuries. Popular ballad writers arose during the days of British administration in India as well as South Africa, North America, New Zealand and Australia. Writers such as Robert Service of Canada and David McKee Wright of New Zealand published their stories in verse during the same period as Banjo Paterson and Henry Lawson achieved prominence in Australia. Their original style owed much to poets like Kipling and Byron. In fact Byron's "Destruction of Sennacherib" was written in the simple rhyming couplet form most prevalent in Bush Poetry. Rudyard Kipling had a large influence on ballad writers like Paterson, Lawson and Ogilvie and elements of classic poets such as Keats and Tennyson are detectable in their work. Early convict songs of The Botany Bay era, with their oral beginnings, definitely had a bearing on bush poetry, but it appears that rollicking style moved over in the 1880s or earlier, for the ballad in dramatic or humorous form. The early convict songs and sea shanties have fed directly into folk music and are alive and well in that scene.

Extractions: The Min Min lights first appeared near the site of the old Min Min Hotel which is located 73 km east of the town at the junction of the roads from McKinlay and Winton. The old hotel is now little more than a ruin although the bottles and the nearby graveyard are a reminder that it obviously had a colourful past. The hotel burned down in 1918 and shortly after that a stockman was followed by a light on his journey to Boulia. It often appears just after dark and is said to be similar to a car headlight except that it manifests itself as a small ball and often follows a traveller for some kilometres before disappearing into the darkness. Among the many rumours associated with the light is the suggestion that anyone who chases it and catches it will disappear. Whether they're seen as ghosts, spirits, extra-terrestrials or electrostatic disturbances, the mysterious 'min min lights' of non-urban legend have been associated with some genuinely unnerving tales ~ car headlights that veer off roads into paddocks and rise smoothly over fences without crashing, the people who get up from outback campfires to follow lights hanging low in the sky and are never seen again, glowing luminous balls that follow walkers down country roads at night, without ever catching up with them.
