Extractions: by Sarah Powell Founder of The Royal Scots "A more fortunate chapter in our family history opened in the early seventeenth century with the military achievements of Sir John Hepburn who has been described by a French military historian as 'one of the best officers Scotland ever produced'. As a young, gallant cavalier Sir John fought as a soldier of fortune with the Bohemian, Dutch, Swedish and French armies. The Swedish King Gustavus Adolphus extolled his virtues and role in a string of victories culminating at Leipzig in 1631 when, family history relates, Hepburn's Scots Brigade, or 'Green Brigade' as it was more popularly known, charged. . .'firing in platoons, they swept on until so close to the Austrians that the very colour of their eyes was visible. . .' Their dramatic offensive 'turned what was apparently going to be a defeat into a glorious victory'. Gustavus expressed his gratitude to the Green Brigade in front of the whole army, 'ascribing the fortune of the day to its bold advance and headlong valour'."

His lips were a little thin for my taste, face a little too masculine, eyes a very ordinary brown. The hair that was tied back in a neat ponytail was an odd shade of brown, neither light nor dark. But I had to look for imperfections because there just werent any." Portrayed by Wes Bentley

A cascade of kaleidoscopic, hypnotic images follows, accompanied by fragments of voice-over from some strange, mystical ideology of media. As the work progresses, it becomes clear that this is a meditation on the alchemies of video and television.

MacLeod's Table alistair whirled. There behind him, in the doorway was one of the Lowland gentry he had seen in the audience chamber. You would do well to mind your words http://www.fables.org/autumn02/macleod.html
Extractions: By Chris Dauten "What a vulgar display of wealth," Alistair snorted as he was escorted through the halls of Edinburgh Castle. The page that led him said nothing. Alistair lurched along behind him, his twisted spine, which had earned him the nickname "Crouchback," not impeding his movement or his speed. The page stopped before a huge set of ornately carved doors, guarded on either side by a soldier of the palace guard. "I will announce you," the page instructed. "You will bow to His Highness, understood?" "Aye." The page signaled for one of the soldiers to draw the doors open, revealing the interior of the King's audience chamber. He then motioned for Alistair to enter. Walking into the chamber, Alistair noted the fancy, Lowland nobles staring at him. He held his head perhaps a little higher than usual while in their presence. The page, just behind him announced in a loud, bellowing voice, "Alistair MacLeod of Dunvegan." Alistair, Chief of the Clan MacLeod, then stepped forward and bowed low to the man seated on the raised throne. "My Lord of Dunvegan," said the King of Scots, "how pleased I am to see a representative of one of my dear Highland Clans." "The pleasure is all Mine, Highness," MacLeod replied, bowing slightly, with no attempt to sound even slightly sincere. For James V to refer to the Highlanders as "dear" was, Alistair felt, an insult. The King's policy had been to suppress the Highland Chiefs, to steal their authority for his own. That authority they were given by the love of their own people. The King sought to hold that authority by royal decree and by force, rather than have it freely given.

What's interesting is that you look not at this culture's loftier productions, but rather at its schmaltz, its trash. What draws you to this? Alistair Gentry: Just being alive, really. It's the culture I'm from. It would be - not fraudulent, but odd for me to do stuff that was too highbrow. I've studied literature and all that, but the things that I talk about with my friends and family are things that have a more direct impact on me. And I'm quite irritable, too. I notice things that other people don't, and get intensely annoyed. Like today, I was in Picadilly, and I saw this girl turn to her boyfriend and announce quite aggressively: 'I'm having a really good time!' There was a comic pause, and then she said: 'And you're having a good time too, aren't you?' She felt that she's got to be having a good time, she's made herself have a good time. I love things like that. I'm more interested in that than in the cultural forces that have produced that moment - although you can't really disentangle the two. The trivia is like the tip of an iceberg, a polystyrene iceberg, on an ocean that's quite deep.
Sithen - Merry Gentry Fanfic Rp During a subsequent undercover assignment designed to catch alistair in the act of breaking Based upon the Meredith gentry books by Laurell K. Hamilton. http://runvs.net/sithen/index.html
Extractions: Welcome to Sithen found at Infinity Bound chat When the fey were allowed to settle in America, they were forced to agree to certain limitations as well as peace between the courts. Many fey lost much of their power, as well as their true names and they were no longer gods. The peace between the Seelie and Unseelie Court did happen to a certain extent. The brutal wars and slaughters stopped, but peace never came. Even now in present day those that wander outside their own Sithen are asking for trouble. Assasinations, duels, rapes and political battles have not stopped. Those that were exiled from the Seelie Court also seek revenge now that they belong to the Unseelie Court. Some of the Sidhe nobles have grown bored, and the younger fey born after the great wars are outside the rivalry. There are still a great many Sidhe of both Courts that have not forgotten past grievances and the Sidhe do not visit the other court. The fey have diplomatic immunity and as long as their battles happen on their land, the humans are none the wiser. It is getting increasingly harder to retain good public relations with the human press, for both Courts. The Queen of the UnSeelie Court and King of the Seelie Court are aware that one small slip in front of the humans would cause them unwanted trouble. The Unseelie Court welcomes anyone, the Seelie Court does not.

But does the writing by some of the complete unknowns leave a lasting impression? Offerings from Elaine Palmer's one-woman, north London publishing phenomenon, Pulp Fiction, are now awaited with an almost unhealthy eagerness. After five compilations of some of the best, new urban writing around - quasi- themed books that have helped hoist the reputations of Jeff Noon, Alistair Gentry and many others - it might be expected that the latest imprint, devoted to staying up way beyond bedtime, would be the icing on the cake. Allnighter, edited by Michael River, boasts the trademark typographical intensity (every page has text leaping off it in different ways), and the familiar feel of writers who are connected to their subject matter as much by their experience as by their imagination. But giving some of the collection's complete unknowns a try-out is not necessarily rewarded: there are quite a few pieces here that merely give a chemically induced grin, wave their hands in the air to a techno beat and leave no lasting impression.
