Extractions: Contemporary life has become more and more dominated by global corporations that influence the leisure choice in society as well as change the way of consumption and the role consumption takes in life of the individual (Ritzer1998). This has led to consumption becomes increasingly important in leisure. One example of modern consumer culture presents the success of the Disney corporation. Disney characters are probably one of the best-known and most popular features across the whole world, which underpins the influential power Disney has on overall culture. Disney films are constructed on the basis of fairytale or other already existing stories and consumed by the audience as pure entertainment hence they might include a certain educative element as Disney understood himself not only as an entrepreneur and entertainer, but also as an moral educator with the task not merely to entertain but also to educate and contribute in the preservation of American culture and history(Giroux 1994). The propagandistic cartoons during the second world war period might present the most extreme form of Disney's educational activities (Bell et al 1995). Walt Disney's strong and charismatic personality combined with his capability to visualise every detail might be the reason for his great influence on practically everything that got produced by the Disney company. He applied his understanding of the world and his values to almost all that is labelled with Disney. The capitalist ideology of Walt Disney, which lead him to success is reflected in the Disney corporation. Disney company's creation strongly depended on his ideas and his overall direction and therefore mirrors his beliefs. His ideology is conveyed consistently through his creations (Bryman 1995/ Byrne 1999). Even more Disney characters are reproductions of Walt Disney's life and served as a justification for his own behaviour (Rojek 1993).

We went to breakfast in our Disney "resort hotel," called the Beach Club. I'm gonna steal your girl . Reader, I could have been much, much better in this situation. I might have rubbed my eyes: boo hoo . Or made a long face and drawn tear lines down my cheeks. Instead I just smiled. Warmly? Gamely? Rictuslike? It's so hard to know from within. In any case, it was an inadequate response, and Chip (I now see) had little choice but to do what he did: lean over my scrambled eggs and propose a nose rub. Still friends . Here things went from bad to worse, and I'm afraid I said the following sentence (quietly, still smiling): "Thanks, old buddy, but I don't think we'll do noses today." Should have done noses, though, because Chip still needed an exit strategy, which he found in tousling my hair and kissing me on the head. Here's the point: At any other age this encounter would have been trouble. As a little boy I would have been scared, as a teenager mortified. As a young man I would have been (in a way that might have spoiled everybody's fun) verbally abusive and possibly violent. Interesting thought: would Chip just take a punch and retreat, or would he swing back? But now, in mellowness, I was just ... fine. I had come to Disney World at exactly the right age.

It is the traveler alone who is foreign. -Robert Louis Stevenson Course Description: Tourism is one of the fastest growing industries in the world. It has become an important aspect of globalization, is intrinsic to our lifestyles and has had a profound impact on peoples of the world and the environments in which they live. This course explores the phenomenon of tourism from an anthropological/sociological perspective. The first portion of the course analyzes the history and socio-cultural structure of tourism, and addresses the institutions of tourism (museums, souvenirs, travel agencies etc) and their role in the construction of "exotic others." We also look at tourist cultures (tourism as pilgrimage, tourism as status-marking, and the psycho-cultural motivations of the tourist, etc.). The second portion of the course will focus on the social, economic, and ecological dynamics entailed in tourism.

Extractions: Entries ... Comments RSS Posted on November 2, 2007 by anotheropinionatedyouth morgansmusings Iâve been seeing the word âtotalitarianismâ a lot these days. Itâs not new for me. But when I see Jeff Wells writing about it, with utter seriousness, and with compelling evidence, as in yesterdayâs post, I pay closer attention. I wonder how many others of us are thinking the same things. But. I confess that there is something about Orwellâs vision that doesnât quite sync with what I see going on in the culture at large. Iâm not talking about language repression, widespread disinfo campaigns, or militarism. Thereâs plenty of that, to be sure. What I donât see is deprivation; what I donât sense is widespread despair â and both are critical elements of Orwellâs dystopian vision. Iâve been mulling this âun-synchâ or âsynch minusâ (to employ a kind of Newspeak) problem over for a long time. At least, since the 2004 Presidential Election. At the time, I was working as a teaching assistant in a college writing class. The subject was Political Rhetoric and the Media, and Orwellâs 1984 was the first book on the reading list. I was eager to hear what younger people had to say about George Orwellâs work, and of the grim scenario he presents in the book. As part of their homework, students were required to watch the film version, the one starring John Hurt as Winston Smith, and then compare the two, always with a mind to the politics of language. It was a good class - interesting discussion. But.
