Left to right, Bill Whitehead, John Harvey, Timothy Findley and Leonard McHardy at the launch of Elizabeth Rex Timothy Irving Frederick Findley Tiff, as he was called by almost everyone who knew him was born in Toronto on October 30, 1930. At an early age, Tiff must have been touched by a muse, as he took ballet lessons aspiring to be a dancer. Very soon though, in his teens, he became a man of words other people's words as he started a career as an actor. In 1953 he was chosen to be a charter member of the Stratford Festival acting company in its inaugural season. He found acting stimulating enough to proceed to London, where he studied and graduated from the Central School of Speech and Drama. His talents as an actor took him to the West End, Broadway and Moscow. During a tour of Thornton Wilder's The Matchmaker , Tiff's talent with words as a writer came to the attention of fellow actor and star Ruth Gordon, and of the great Mr. Wilder himself, who encouraged him to write. He returned to Canada where he continued to act, but where the writing bug must have taken over. In the early 1960's he met his lifelong partner, Bill Whitehead, himself a writer and producer who hired Tiff as an actor. That partnership gave Tiff the support he needed to give up acting and develop a career as a writer. His natural ear for dialogue gave him the ability to write screenplays (

The second surviving son of a financially straitened family in the prestigious Rosedale district. Findley's health was poor throughout his childhood; his attendance and interest in school was erratic, and he did not finish grade ten. He subsequently studied dance and then turned to acting. He joined the original acting ensemble of the Stratford Festival in 1953, where he met and worked alongside Alec Guinness. He accepted Guinness's offer to sponsor his attendance at the Central School of Speech and Drama in London. In London he befriended Ruth Gordon and playwright Thornton Wilder while acting in Wilder's The Matchmaker in 1954. He published his first short story, "About Effie," in The Tamarack Review in 1956 (reprinted in Dinner Along the Amazon [1984]), and began to consider a career in writing under the encouragement of his friends Gordon and Wilder. Extractions: Author profile: Timothy Findley Born in Toronto in 1930, Timothy Findley began his artistic career studying dance and then later theatre. Findley became quite successful as an actor, even acting alongside Sir Alec Guinness at the Stratford Festival in the 1950s. In fact, it was not until he became friends with the actress Ruth Gordon that Findley even considered writing as a vocation. It was after his first short story was published in The Tamarack Review , that Gordon was able to convince him that he should give up acting and concentrate on writing fiction. Findley's first success as a novelist, however, did not come in Canada. His first two novels, The Last of the Crazy People (1967) and The Butterfly Plague (1969), were rejected by Canadian publishers and were eventually published in Britain. This all changed, however, with The Wars (1977). Published to great critical acclaim, Findley's third novel went on to win the Governor General's Award for fiction and was adapted for film in 1981. Since then he has published five more novels, each helping to establish his reputation as one of Canada's most popular and beloved novelists.

Timothy Irving Frederick Findley"Tiff" to his friendswas born into a prosperous Toronto family on October 30, 1930 and grew up in the fashionable Rosedale section of the city. His father was the first person outside of the founding families to head the Massey-Ferguson company. His mother's family had a piano factory. Sponsor Message. Although Findley grew up in a privileged environment, his childhood was far from happy. Under the influence of alcohol his father frequently terrorized Findley's mother and older brother. Findley himself generally escaped his wrath, but, in the words of journalist Alec Scott, "vicarious scar tissue developed nonetheless" in the sensitive young boy. Findley suffered from poor health as a child. He nearly died of pneumonia in his second year, and shortly thereafter he was confined to an oxygen tent due to complications of an ear infection.
