There, she mixed with the Anglo-Irish gentry, particularly Kitty Pakenham (later the wife of Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington ), Lady Moira, and her aunt Margaret Ruston of Black Castle . She acted as manager of her father's estate, later drawing on this experience for her novels about the Irish. Edgeworth's early literary efforts were melodramatic rather than realistic. One of her schoolgirl novels features a villain who wore a mask made from the skin of a dead man's face. Her novels and stories fall into three categories: sketches of Irish life, commentary on contemporary English society, and instruction in children's moral training. Published between 1796 and 1834, her work is characterized by both a Scott-like Romantic attachment to the past and an Austenian wit and rationalism. The English-born Edgeworth was the second of 21 children (by four wives). Her father was Richard Lovell Edgeworth, who held both an Irish estate and progressive ideas on education, particularly on the shortcomings of female education. Maria Edgeworth was schooled in Derby, England, and then in London. Her father believed that education was central to the construction of the "new" individual of the 18th century, who would rise on merit rather than birth an idea derived from and also spurring the revolutions in politics and philosophy in the late 1700s. In 1782, Edgeworth went to live with her father at Edgeworthstown in Ireland to serve as his property manager. Here she collected material for her novels about Irish landlords and peasants, but she also ingested his theories of education. She gained a first-hand experience of the Irish peasantry by acting as her father's assistant in the management of the estate. The Edgeworths were in Ireland from 1793 onwards through that dangerous period, and Maria's letters, always gay and natural, make very light of their anxieties and their real perils. Mr Edgeworth encouraged his daughter's literary instincts. It has been the fashion to regard his influence over Maria's work as altogether deplorable, but against the disadvantages arising from his interference must be weighed the stimulus she undoubtedly derived from his powerful mind. The author points out that, in her time, Maria Edgeworth was a well-respected, popular, and published author of some renown and is considered to be one of the western world's best female novelists of the 19th century. The author, nonetheless, believes that the novel "Belinda" is often tedious and repetitive; Edgeworth's prose can often be difficult because of her many long passages. "In chapter XVI, Belinda goes to Lady Anne Percival, and experiences domestic happiness in their house. Chapter XVII begins with a discussion between Belinda and Mrs. Freke, who spread rumor of the relationship between Clarence Hervey and Lady Delacour. Belinda meets Mr. Vincent. In chapter XVIII, Mr. Vincent brings up the differences obvious between the happy, domestic Anne Percival and Lady Delacour, but Belinda quiets him by noting her friendship with the Lady Delacour. Lady Anne Percival tells Belinda of Mr. Vincent's affection for Belinda, and Belinda tells Lady Ann about Clarence Hervey. In chapter XIX Belinda learns of Lady Delacour's poor health, and decides to return to Lady Delacour. In XX, Belinda is taken into the lives of Lady Delacour and Clarence Hervey. In XXI, we see the cold interaction of Lady Delacour and her daughter Helena."

Even though in her late seventies, no-one had worked more strenuously or with such hospitality and kindness as she had worked for the relief of the stricken peasants at the height of the famine. She had shown the same involvement and generosity throughout her entire life and had devoted her best talents to the betterment of the people of her adoption. Maria Edgeworth's books on the Irish people brought her world fame and the acclaim of such writers as Sir Walter Scott, Jane Austen, Byron and the Russian writer Turgenev. The second child of Richard Lovell Edgeworth , Maria was born on New Year's Day 1767, at Blackbourton, Oxfordshire. She was sent to school at Derby until when she was 14. The death of her mother at this time brought Edgeworth and his eldest daughter closer together. He wanted her to contribute something to the world (he himself was an inventor, road builder, politician, educationalist and writer) . He was determined that Maria would "have a tincture of every species of literature, and form a taste by choice and not by chance." Thus after Derby she went to school in London. In 1782 she came to Edgeworthstown with her father and acted as his chief assistant and secretary in the management of his estates here. She gained the intimate knowledge of Irish peasant life that was to form the backbone of her novels. She helped to educate her brothers and sisters, and the stories she invented for them were later published and sold well

But what is less well known is that F. Y. Edgeworth was not the first in the Edgeworth family to have a considerable interest in economics. His aunt, the Victorian author, Maria Edgeworth (1767-1849), could claim the title of the first political economist in the Edgeworth family. Maria was born in England, though she lived most of her life in Ireland. The family had owned property in Ireland for nearly two centuries when on Maria's fifteenth birthday her father, Richard Edgeworth, moved his family to the family mansion at Edgeworthstown. Edgeworthstown was her home until her death in 1847. The family estate was a large one involving a myriad of activities including the assignment of leases, the collection of rents, and the improvement of the land. In addition, as the most significant property owner in the hamlet, her faather also had a degree of political influence and obligations. As one of the eldest of the twenty-two children which Richard Edgeworth fathered, considerable responsibility fell to Maria both in conducting the affairs of the estate and in educating her siblings. She was, in the words of one of her biographers, "his right hand." As a result, she acquired a familiarity with economic and political matters rare for a woman of her age.
