And while his start-up may seem like a niche outlet for indy/obscure titles, its ambitions are actually larger than that. Costikyan is, with little dispute, among the smartest people in the industry, and his case for Manifesto is based on a broad and sharp critique of the game business in the era of broadband and next gen consoles. On why the industry is destined for disaster Even the larger publishers are starting to become scared at the cost of developing for next-gen consoles. In truth, the current model favors only one part of the value chain: the console manufacturers.

Extractions: greg.costikyan@nokia.com From the earliest times, it's been possible to discern clear genre divisions among games, genres based on a collection of game mechanics. The pattern can be seen even in games of the Neolithic, and continues with digital games today. Since the inception of games as a commercial industry (in the 18 th century), it also appears that new genres have, over time, attracted new audiences; in recent years, the rise in development cost has reduced publishers' willingness to experiment with games sufficiently innovative to potentially create new game genres, which may be a risk to the industry's long-term health. Game history, game genre While no clear evidence of games from Neolithic cultures in Asia and Europe survive, some games of Native American cultures are well documented (Culin, 1907). They fall into two main categories: gambling games and track games. Gambling games are generally based on the casting of binary lots, with pay-offs varying with the difficulty of achieving different scores (but not corresponding to the actual odds, since Paleolithic cultures do not understand formal statistics); some are based on the casting of astragals (knucklebones or the like, generating other than binary numbers). Parlett (Parlett, 1999) asserts that similar games using binary lots are known in all cultures that play games at all. Unlike modern gambling games, these games seem to appeal for mystical reasons as well as for the sake of winning the stakes involved: they are a way of testing your luck, or favor with the spirits.

Extractions: Greg Costikyan Greg Costikyan , also known as Designer X, is an American game designer and science fiction writer. Costikyan's career spans nearly all extant genres of gaming, including hex-based wargames, role-playing games, boardgames, card games, computer games, online games and mobile games. Several of his games have won Origins Awards. His fictional works feature the fantasy genre parody Another Day, Another Dungeon and its sequel One Quest, Hold the Dragons. A more recent work, First Contract, depicts (with much dry humor) the vast sociological and economic changes that happen after aliens arrive on Earth, and one entrepreneur's efforts to survive and make a new start. He also wrote a lively adventure story, titled By the Sword, about a young barbarian who is forced by circumstances to make his way in the larger world.

Extractions: I can vividly recall only a few key dates in my early life. The day my mom died very suddenly, and too young. The day I graduated and re-established a romance with my ex-wife. The Christmas Eve when we, the family, were all glued to the television watching the astronauts orbit the moon. Events like that, which were important turning points for me, for better and for worse. One date that stands out is December 8th in 1980. The day John Lennon was shot by a lunatic. I was with my girlfriend Kathy at the time, in her house. We heard it on the radio and saw it on TV. Friends and family called; we called people too. It was unbelievable. We were in tears. A family member had died. A friend had passed away. A unique, brilliant, inspiring, playful, poetic, dark, light and humorous voice of the Earth had been silenced by a gun.

Extractions: is an article published in 1994 where Greg Costikyan, the author, put together a deep analysis of the core components of a game and gives his personal view of what make a game something that is interesting to play. To me his views are in large part matching with a exhaustive and useful definitio of what games are worth for. In particular I find interesting his conclusions: After a logical sequence of definitions about games, toys, goals and interactivity, Costikyan finally gives a concise definition: A game is a form of art in which participants, termed players, make decisions in order to manage resources through game tokens in the pursuit of a goal. A puzzle is static. A game is interactive. (A game) is not a toy.
