She has given us all something with this patriotic story. Happy Independence Day celebration from The LCMS Foundation! THE AFTERMATH by Michele Wallace Campanelli When I stepped outside my house and glanced down my street, I knew that America wasn't the same. The most horrific terrorist attack in human history affected more than New York City, the Pentagon, the Pennsylvania crash site, and rescue personnel. It affected every one of us millions of Americans, young and old, from all races and religions. Flags were flying on every house down my block. I realized that my husband and I, who had recently bought our first home, didn't have a flag of our own. Donating blood and money no longer felt like enough. Immediately, I left on a quest to find an American flag to show my patriotic spirit. After starting up my ancient car, I headed to the local Kmart, Wal-Mart, Home Depot, Lowe's, Ace Hardware and then craft stores. Everywhere I was told the same thing, "We had flags this morning, but they were all sold. Come back again and we'll have more flags next week."

Cosmetic surgery "Inner Sustanence" by Michele Wallace Campanelli All I ever wanted was to be popular. Have the coolest friends. Be in a hot rock band and date the best-looking men-simple wishes for a young girl. Some of my dreams even came true. I started a rock band. And the cutest guy at Melbourne High School even asked me out. I answered yes of course, but within a week, he complained, "Your hips are too big. You need to lose weight to look thin like the other girls in your band." Immediately, I tried several different diets to lose weight. For one, I ate grapefruit and vegetables only. That didnt work; I felt faint and had to eat. The second week I tried skipping breakfast and dinner. When I did that, I became so hungry by the time dinner came, I splurged and eventually started gaining weight. Ten pounds I added in a month trying to please my boyfriend. Instead of praising my efforts, he cut me down even more. "You look like a whale," he said, making me feel not as pretty as my other friends who wanted to date him. I felt self-conscious and didnt want to lose him as a boyfriend, so I desperately searched for another way to lose the pounds that were keeping him at bay. One evening after a date, I got so angry by his "whale" remarks that I ate an enormous piece of cake. The guilt made me want to try something I had seen other girls in my school doing at lunch break: throw up. I went to my bathroom and without even thinking of the consequence, stuck my finger down my throat and threw up in the toilet.

Extractions: Loving lizards is an acquired taste. As a child I was always fascinated with the little creatures. Besides crawling outside the screened-in porch of my Florida home with their flicking and bobbing heads, I witnessed spotted geckos sticking to windows and walls with their suction-cupped fingers. Strangely, they grunted in a low pitched tone on humid nights. Growing up, I couldn't learn enough about lizards. To me they were small dinosaurs deserving of respect. Being a female, my interest in lizards often surprised people. Never afraid of them, I came to discover that there were literally thousands of varieties with varying shapes and unusual colorings. My favorite reptile was one of the largest, the giant Green Iguana. With brown striped tails, giant spikes on their head and back, razor sharp nails on alien-looking, multiple jointed fingers, these creatures intrigued me. Native to South America, Iguanas run wild in many areas of the Dominican Republic, Equator, and Galapagos Islands. Even in the tropical paradise Cancun, they swim in hotel pools and bury their giant long bodies in the sand underneath the sidewalks. Males can grow over six feet long.

Extractions: #1 New York Times Best-selling Author Melisa and I have known each other since we were young teens in the United Methodist Youth Group. She was a big time player on a local junior high softball team and very popular. Even though we didnt have much in common (Im not a bit athletic and younger), she took me under her wing. We grew up together. Years passed quickly and when Melisa got married, I served as one of her bridesmaids. After her wedding, Melisa moved to Kentucky and traveled on the road with her trucker husband. Not a month would pass that I didnt receive a letter or phone call from Melisa telling me about the breathtaking sights across America. Through her travels, we remained very close. Then one day the phone rang. From the tremor in her voice, I could tell something was terribly wrong. I just came from the doctors office, Melisas voice quivered. Remember when I told you about all those headaches and how my vision sometimes got dark? My neurologist ran a CAT scan. At first he thought it was macular degeneration and told me to go to an eye specialist. But after the eye
