She won both Hugo and Nebula awards. In 1995, she became the first science fiction writer to receive MacArthur Foundation "Genius" Grant. Butler was born and raised in Pasadena, California. As her father Laurice, a shoe shiner, died when she was a baby, Butler was raised by her grandmother and her mother (also named Octavia) who worked as a maid in order to support the family. Butler grew up in a struggling, racially mixed neighborhood. According to the Norton Anthology of African American Literature, Butler was "an introspective only child in a strict Baptist household" and "was drawn early to magazines such as Amazing, Fantasy and Science Fiction, and Galaxy and soon began reading all the science fiction classics" . Octavia Jr., known as "Junie", was thus considered shy and a "daydreamer" and was later diagnosed as being dyslexic. She began writing at the age of 10 "to escape loneliness and boredom"; she was 12 when she began a lifelong interest in science fiction. "I was writing my own little stories and when I was 12, I was watching a bad science fiction movie called Devil Girl from Mars", she told the journal Black Scholar, "and decided that I could write a better story than that. And I turned off the TV and proceeded to try, and I've been writing science fiction ever since."

Our discussion focused on five of Ms. Smith's full-body sculptures, and covered topics ranging from bodily fluids to the iconography of the Roman Catholic Church. Those of us who had already read this month's book club selection (Fledgling by Octavia E. Butler), gasped in unison as we came upon the wall-gripping bronze entitled "Lilith." For, as we looked into those eerie, all-too-human eyes, we couldn't help but be startled by the sculpture's striking resemblance to the novel's protagonist, a child-vampire named Shori. Up on the ninth floor, our discussion of the novel began somberly as we paused briefly to eulogize author Octavia Butler, who passed away this past week. Because much of her work deals so directly with re-examining and re-defining human life, and all of its permutations, it seemed somewhat uncomfortable yet some how appropriate to dive right into to an investigation of her most recent, and, unfortunately, her final work. Most of us reacted positively to the novel, and expressed agreement on its progressive social positionings against racism, sexism, and the inherent perils of hierarchical structures. There was some discord, however, in evaluating the literary merits of the prose itself, with a somewhat predictable breakdown between fans and non-fans of the science-fiction genre.

Octavia Butler - Interview on Democracy Now Butler gave this interview on her work in November 2005, shortly after release of her last novel, Fledgling. Wild Seed The first in the Patternist series (in terms of story chronology, not the first published) tells the story of Doro, the vampire/shape shifter/slaver who is the father/domesticator of all those talented mutants in the rest of the books. Kindred Kindred is probably the best known novel in the Patternist series, which included Patternmaster, Mind of My Mind, Clay's Ark, Wild Seed and Survivor. Following from an idea about how slavery and vampirism affect the vampire and his victims, Butler describes the life of Doro, an immortal, and his descendants. Bloodchild Bloodchild is a collection of short fiction and essays by Butler, including some fabulous recommendations to dreamers in the essay called 'A Positive Obsession'.

She then attended California State University, Los Angeles and the University of California, Los Angeles. She credits her success to nonacademic programs, though. Her work experiences come through in the character of Dana in her novel Kindred (as quoted above). Butler also spends time researching developments in biology, the physical sciences, and genetics. Butler has won several awards for her writing. In 1984 she won a Hugo Award for her short story, "Speech Sounds." In 1985 she won the Hugo for her novella "Bloodchild." "Bloodchild" also won the 1984 Nebula Award. The Hugo and Nebula Awards are considered science fiction's highest awards. They are decided on by other science fiction writers and fans. In 1995, Butler won the MacArthur Foundation "genius grant" which pays $295,000 over 5 years.

As a reader, you get many, many authors who dazzle and challenge you, who turn you on, who piss you off, or make you think, or reveal to you what a book can be. But if you're a writer, you only get one author who turns you out. It's not mystical; it's a function of timing. At that moment when your metaphorical pen is poised, and the world is about to come into focus for you and begin emitting stories, there will be one author who shows up, smiles at you, and opens the gates. My friend Russell turned me on to Octavia Butler in early 2001. I had been working in the Asian American arts community for a couple of years and I guess he thought it would behoove me to get another view of what an "ethnic" literature could be. I bought "Parable of the Sower". Two days later I went to the bookstore and bought every other book of hers I could find on the shelves. It took six months of searching local new and used bookstores, but I devoured her entire body of work (except her disowned novel "Survivor", of which there are now three used copies available on Amazon, for $50 - 85.)

Programming Life and the Zen of Computers Main Posted in Reviews Zenzo I'm going to be posting a number of book reviews this week as I used a chunk of the weekend while Zenzo slept to catch up on my reading. Some'll be technical, some not. I've just finished a haunting book called kindred by the amazing and prolific Octavia Butler . This is the 25th anniversary edition from 2004 - this book was written in 1979. The premise is that Dana, a modern Black woman, is called back to the early 19th century to save the life of a white ancestor. In the present her husband is White and at one point is pulled back with her. The dynamics of their relationship change dramatically as it is assumed that she is a recently enslaved freewoman from the North travelling with her owner (in fact her husband.) Their relationship is tested as they are forced to live dramatically different lives. Most painfully to watch is how quickly and believably they slip into their expected roles, that of slave and slave owner. As an interracial couple they've typically swept awareness of their differing ethnicities under the rug, but those differences and associated race memories are pulled to the forefront when the extraordinary circumstances drag on.
