Butler was pronounced dead at Northwest Hospital after a fall at her home in Lake Forest Park, outside of Seattle. It's reported that she struck her head on the cobbled walkway outside her home. Parable of the Talents Butler began writing at age 10, and told friends she embraced science fiction after seeing a schlocky B-movie called "Devil Girl from Mars" and thought, "I can write a better story than that." In 1970, she took a bus from her hometown of Pasadena, California, to attend a fantasy writers workshop in East Lansing, Michigan.

Butler has been an inspiration to a new generation of writers for the last quarter century. In the mid-1970s, at a time when few women - and even fewer blacks - were writing science fiction, Butler persisted, publishing the first three novels ( Patternmaster Mind of My Mind and Survivor ) in her "Patternist" series. Then, in 1979, she published Kindred Although she has written a dozen or so novels and numerous short stories (and won two Hugos and a Nebula), she is still most celebrated for Kindred . Now, Beacon Press has published a special 25th anniversary edition of Kindred, which includes a critical essay and discussion questions.

I was pretty much begging him to disprove it. At first he emailed back and said there was nothing on the wires about it, but I guess what we have to understand that just because our prophets die, the AP will not neccesarily stop the presses to spread the news. Champion kept digging and finally, he called the King County Medical Examiner where it was confirmed. Octavia Butler is dead and the world is the worse off for it. About three months ago, I ran into Ms. Butler in the Chicago O'Hare airport. I was unsure if I should speak to her, as she was famous for being shy. But I approached her and told her how much I loved her work, how much it meant to me. I can't tell you how happy I am that a random encounter gave me the opportunity to pay my respects while she was still able to hear them. There are comments on "R.I.P. Octavia Butler"

As a female author, most of whose books gravely and movingly address gender issues, she was an important contributor to the discourses of 20th-century feminism. And she was an intermittently superb writer of science fiction, also contributing to that world as teacher and lecturer. Octavia Estelle Butler ("Junie" as a child, Estelle to friends in adult life) was born of poor parents in Pasadena, California, in 1947. Her father died when she was young, and her mother worked as a cleaning lady; the unblinking authenticity of her depictions of urban life in California under apocalyptic stress, as rich and poor alike become refugees in a land that was supposed to be theirs, derive directly from her own experiences.

Butler was one of the most thoughtful and imaginative authors of her time. One of the few black writers in the science-fiction field, she took full advantage of the speculative freedom that the genre allows writers to explore her interest in sociology, biology, race relations, American history, and the future of humanity. She was a pioneer in bringing black people into the imagined future that is the most common focus of science fiction, and in telling the story of that future in the voices of black women. Octavia Estelle Butler was born in Pasadena, California, to Laurice and Octavia M. (Guy) Butler. Her father was a shoeshine man who died when she was a baby, and her mother was a maid. Although they lived in a racially mixed community, her mother took her to work with her when no child care was available, and there the young Octavia observed the condescension and lack of respect that black servants of the time were expected to accept. An only child, she did not get along easily with other children, and at school she tended to withdraw into shyness and the worlds of reading and imagination. By the time she was ten, she was producing her own short stories. Watching a bad science fiction movie on television one day convinced her that she could write something better, and she immediately set out to prove it. The stories that resulted laid the groundwork for the later development of her first series of novels.

(Reviewed by Judi Clark OCT 1, 1998) The central character, Eli, is the only survivor of a ship wreck (space ship, that is), and is carrying an alien disease/life form that redesigns the human body and is intent on taking over all human bodies. The "disease" is highly communicable and the alien life form drives it's host to thrive for physical contact. What makes this book interesting is how Elli strives to keep his humanity by trying to "contain" this disease and the measures he and his "family" must take to "feed" this alien life form. OK, I've told you enough. Go pick up your own copy! You'll not be disappointed by Ms. Butler's writing style and story. This book is number five in the "Patternist" series. I didn't miss not having read the others first, the story stands on its own. But of course, I promise to do due diligence on this series later.

And he was a handful of African-Americans in a school comprised almost entirely of whites. This made no difference to me. I was simply relieved to meet someone who dug Full Metal Jacket and Doctor Who Amazon Women on the Moon Back in those days, I was a heavy reader of science fiction. Isaac Asimov, Robert Heinlein, Arthur C. Clarke, Ray Bradbury, Robert Sheckley, Richard Matheson, Harlan Ellison, Robert Bloch, and Douglas Adams were all names that graced the covers of the books I read. Fantastic worlds reflecting the phantsmagorical awaited me in the library. But when I checked out a mass-market paperback of Kindred Kindred which explained to me why I had been hurt and taunted and abused. That was no small task. To me, Kindred was one of those key books that told me that literature was about something. Years later, in my late twenties, I reread the book and was astonished by how well it had held up. And with more than decade of life experience accumulated, the chasm between Kevin and Dana hurt even more.
