Many legends and stories have been told about her. It is difficult to sort fact from fiction in many cases, but one thing is certain, she led a life that few women of that time would have survived. Calamity Jane was born May 1, 1852, near Princeton, Mo. with the given name of Martha Jane Cannary. Most accounts of her life agree that the family moved to Virginia City, Montana around the year 1865. Calamity Jane was always interested in things like riding, shooting and hunting. She gained the respect of many men in the wagon train they traveled with. She became an expert horsewoman and sharp shooter at an early age. Martha often fished and hunted with the men alongside her father and brothers. Stories state that Marthaâs mother died en route to Virginia City. She also lost her father and brothers by the time she was fourteen years of age. Some accounts say her father died in Salt Lake City, Utah, while others have her separated from her father and brothers during an Indian uprising near Virginia City, Montana. Either way, Calamity Jane grew up in the mining towns of the West making a living in whatever fashion she could. She gained a formidable reputation as a sharpshooter and horsewoman and was known for her contempt of convention which she displayed by wearing menâs clothing, cussing, chewing tobacco, drinking and in general trying to best the men she associated with.

She was born Martha Jane Cannary (or Canary) in Princeton, Missouri. Her mother died in 1866 and her father died in 1867 (in Utah). In 1870, she signed on as a scout with George Armstrong Custer, and adopted the uniform of a soldier. It is unclear whether she was actually enlisted in the U.S. Army at the time. She was involved with a number of campaigns in the long-running military conflicts involving Native Americans. In 1872, she acquired the nickname "Calamity Jane," by rescuing her superior Captain Egan from an ambush near Sheridan, Wyoming. In 1876, Jane served briefly as a rider with the Pony Express and settled in the area of Deadwood, South Dakota, in the Black Hills region. She claimed to have been married to Wild Bill Hickok at some time prior to Hickok's death in 1876, and that Hickok was the father of her child, born September 25, 1873, who was placed for adoption. In 1878 Jane nursed the victims of a smallpox epidemic in the Dakota territories. She married Clinton Burke in 1891 after the couple had been living together several years.

Extractions: Martha Jane Cannary Burke .....Born 1852....near Princeton, MO. Her biggest love was horses, a fondness for the outdoors and adventure. She started riding at an early age. She was able to ride the most stubborn and vicious horses. Marthy was FIERCELY independent. She tried to earn her keep by working at Proper Female occupations ... like cooking and washing clothes, but them tame activities didn't suit her. She AIMED to get around the many rules and restrictions females had on them, so she quit wearing skirts and started dressing like, and preteding to be a boy, so she could get hired for more exciting jobs and better pay. At an early age she learned to cuss like a mule skinner, gamble, shoot better than most men and even learned to like the taste of whiskey. Around the age of 16 she made her way all over the West, behaving so fearlessly and outrageously that she was bound to be noticed. Anyone who encountered her, NEVER believed more than briefly that she was a boy, so a problem arose, what could you call a female who somehow got away with defying so many rules? "I can't remember just how or when the name Calamity Jane came to stick with me, I could tell you at elast half a dozen stories....some believe it was because, when any one opposed me, I would threaten that a calamity would befall them.."
