Married in 1897, his father was a Catholic and his mother a Protestant. Brecht was their first child, baptized as Eugen Bertolt Friedrich Brecht. His father, Bertolt Friedrich Brecht, worked in a paper factory. His mother, Wilhelmine Friederike Sophie Brezing, was ill with breast cancer most of his young life. He had one brother, Walter, who was born in 1900. Brecht was a sickly child, having a congenital heart condition and a facial tic. As a result he was sent to a sanitarium to relax. At age six he attended a Protestant elementary school (Volksschule) and at age ten a private school, The Royal Bavarian Realgymnasium (Koeniglich-Bayerisches Realgymnasium). Like most students, he was educated in Latin and the humanities, later being exposed to Nietzsche and other thinkers. He suffered a heart attack at the age of twelve but soon recovered and continued his education. He was born on 10 February, 1898 in Augsburg in Bavaria, Germany. His childhood and early youth were passed in years of tempestuous events filled with drama events which were historic not only for Germany, but for the whole of Europe and humanity. It was at this time that there occurred the profound crisis of the capitalist world of the beginning of our century, together with the politico-historical events linked with it which led to the outbreak of the First World War with all its destructive consequences. These tragic events left their mark on the young Brecht and powerfully influenced the formation of his character. We see the young Brecht incline towards progressive ideas, towards concern for and defence of the destiny of the common man evidence of the early formation in him of democratic and patriotic ideas. This was reflected in his first poems, written from the age of sixteen. These poems have an anti-militarist spirit and are permeated by the leitmotiv of struggle against the War. The term Epic Theater, used by Brecht for the first time in 1926, did not originate with him, although it is generally applied to his work today. It was already in the air in 1924 when Brecht moved from Munich to Berlin and was first used in connection with revolutionary experiments by director Erwin Piscator. Many playwrights and composers produced plays and musical compositions in the 1920s which have been since been labeled epic (Stravinisky, Pirandello, Claudel), and others have followed in their footsteps (Wilder, Miller, Becket). Brecht (‘ Theatre for Pleasure or Theatre for Instruction ” in Willett, 1957: 71) distinguishes between the Dramatic and the Epic Spectator. If we assume people grow up in the dramatic aesthetic, then the task of critical management studies is to defamiliarize it with epic theatre. "In order to produce A Effects the actor has to discard whatever means he has learned of persuading the audience to identify itself with the characters which he plays. Aiming not to put his audience into a trance, he must not go into a trance himself. His muscles must remain loose, for a turn of the head, e.g., with tautened neck muscles, will "magically" lead the spectators' eyes and even their heads to turn with it, and this can only detract from any speculation or reaction which the gestures may bring about. His way of speaking has to be free from ecclesiastical singsong and from all those cadences which lull the spectator so that the sense gets lost." Between 1919 and 1921 he wrote theatre criticisms for the left-wing Socialist paper Die Augsburger. After military service as a medical orderly, he returned to his studies, but abandoned them in 1921. During the Bavarian revolutionary turmoil of 1918, Brech wrote his first play, BAAL, which was produced in 1923. The play celebrated life and sexuality and was huge success.

Brecht was influenced by a wide variety of sources including Chinese, Japanese, and Indian theatre, the Elizabethans (especially Shakespeare ), Greek tragedy, Wedekind , fair-ground entertainments, the Bavarian folk play, and many more. Such a wide variety of sources might have proven overwhelming for a lesser artist, but Brecht had the uncanny ability to take elements from seemingly incompatible sources, combine them, and make them his own. In his early plays, Brecht experimented with dada and expressionism, but in his later work, he developed a style more suited his own unique vision. He detested the "Aristotelian" drama and its attempts to lure the spectator into a kind of trance-like state, a total identification with the hero to the point of complete self-oblivion, resulting in feelings of terror and pity and, ultimately, an emotional catharsis. He didn't want his audience to feel emotionshe wanted them to think and towards this end, he determined to destroy the theatrical illusion, and, thus, that dull trance-like state he so despised.

As the Berlin Wall came down in 1989, word went out that this action drew on the inspiration of ``the three B's'' - Biermann, Bahro and Brecht. The masses of Berliners who took to the streets in search of a new beginning had chosen their heroes well: Wolf Biermann was a master of the protest song, something of a Germanic Bob Dylan but with an allegiance to socialism; Rudolf Bahro, a sometime jailed GDR dissident who, after being exiled to the West, became a major theoretician and leader of the German Greens; and Bertolt Brecht (1898-1956), renowned poet and playwright. Brecht's ready listing was sure to fuel the immense controversy that he has attracted since his early theatrical successes in the 1920s. Sometimes compared to Shakespeare (by Charles Laughton), Brecht is generally considered one of the great playwrights and directors of the 20th century. Even now, almost 40 years after his death, his plays - along with those of Chekhov - are the most frequently performed works in the modern repertoire.
