Extractions: About the Course: Robert Kroetsch once described Canada s literature as being united by its disunity, bound together by its multiplicity, specified by its resistance to specific borders. Our examination of Canadian fiction will attempt to investigate this claim. While admittedly focused on fiction written since the mid-twentieth century, therefore, this course begins by considering the foundational themes commonly studied in surveys of CanLit. Our readings will also consider how contemporary writers in Canada not only invoke traditional stories and settings, but also write against prototypical models of the nation and the subject, achieving an overall body of literature that moves both within and against its own histories. Course Requirements and Assignments: Students are expected to attend all classes, having read and reflected upon primary materials. Absence from class will result in deductions from final grades. If a student cannot attend class, s/he must report his/her absence to the instructor prior to class. All assignments are due on the dates listed below.
