On 30 September 1907, she was married to Henry Bellamann , a writer, musician, and music educator from Fulton, Missouri. Throughout the thirty-eight years of their marriage, the Bellamanns resided in many places in this country, including Columbia, SC, Philadelphia, and New York City. They also made many long trips abroad where Dr. Bellamann pursued his musical studies. Following her husband's death in 1944, Mrs. Bellamann returned to Mississippi and lived in Jackson until she died on 8 November 1956. It is at once both sad and fitting that Mrs. Bellamann is remembered primarily as the author of Parris Mitchell of Kings Row (1948), a sequel to her husband's majestic Kings Row (1940). It is sad because Mrs. Bellamann was a woman whose many artistic accomplishments generally were overshadowed by those of her husband. It is fitting, however, that she should be remembered for Parris Mitchell of Kings Row because the unique creative association that grew between the couple was a source of much pride to Mrs. Bellamann. In the Foreword to

He died in New York. During the years that Bellamann taught, he wrote poetry and published three volumes: Although his poetry is today even less well known than his fiction, Bellamann was recognized by David Perkins in his 1976 History of Modern Poetry , in which he ranks Bellamann with the serious minor poets who "adopted the mode" of the Imagists (p. 347). In 1942 Publishers Weekly inaccurately reported that Bellamann was an author "new to the book trade" prior to the publication of Kings Row in 1940 (143:244). However, in addition to the three volumes of poetry already mentioned, four of Bellamann's novels were published before

After studying under Isidor Philipp and Charles-Marie Widor, Bellamann held posts of importance at Chicora College for Women (1907-1924), the Juilliard Music Foundation (1924-1926), and the Curtis Institute of Music (1931-1932). He was also editor of the music periodical Overtones . Probably it was his interest in music that led him to poetry, for his verse shows the influence of his long study of the music of Claude Debussy. In 1907, Bellamann married a woman who encouraged him as a novelist and who herself became a novelist. After Bellamannâs sudden death of a heart attack in 1945, Katherine Jones Bellamann completed her husbandâs last, unfinished novel, Parris Mitchell , a sequel to Kings Row , the book that made Henry Bellamann famous. This novel, with its large cast of characters, shows Bellamannâs own peculiar and successful blend of horror story, historical sociology, and Freudian psychology. The book became the basis for a sensationally successful motion picture.
