Extractions: This book is, in my opinion, the Ultimate Horror Novel - it is Horror, it is Thriller, it is Mystery, and it is a runaway train ride that will propel you to the most satisfying conclusion I have ever seen a writer craft. I usually summarize or at least give a thumbnail sketch of the plot in my reviews - I don't want to do that here, because I want you to come to this novel the same way I did, without any preconceptions of what it might be about. To qoute from WIDOW'S WALK: "When a living thing is killed by another living thing it's always murder." How can a line like that at the beginning of a story, presenting such a unique perspective, fail to captivate us right until the very last word? Steve Beai knows how to grab your attention and not let you go until that final page. Set aside several hours of uninterrupted reading, because if you're FORCED to put this book down before finishing it, you'll be thinking of nothing else but when you'll be able to pick it up again and jump right back onto that hurtling train. I picked it up before bed, and never GOT to bed. Since I'm in essence saying "Trust me on this one" without so much as giving you a hint of what the novel may be about, let me quote a passage:

If you spot any errors, or if you have any comments, please contact her at lusnyde@cyberus.ca Crespo Ward realized his dream as it converged on the cusp of his nightmares. By asking around, the retirement party long since over, that tedious dance of shaking hands with well-wishers who wished him everything but, Crespo was able to call in a few favors that led him to the house where he hoped to spend his life doing what he loved most of all. The house was a good hour from Framingham, over bumpy rural stretches of narrow road, through a sunburst of changing leaves over the New England countryside, heralding the coming winter. A few wrong turns and frustrated glances at the outdated road map he had bought back at the Sunoco station in Framingham later, and he was pulling up the hard-packed dirt driveway, the U-Haul creaking painfully behind the Escort wagon. The grounds were somewhat overgrown, but manageable enough, Crespo reasoned, thanks to the early frosts which had stunted growth on the foliage. There was a gazebo off to one side of the house, its ornate sides a trellis for the creeping vines, now brown and dormant. As the car bounced down the lane, bringing the gazebo into view, Crespo imagined himself sitting in there, feet up, surrounded by silence, paper draped over his stomach and enjoying the last few warmer days of late fall. When the work was done, of course.

Extractions: Technology has brought us a long way in the past 20 years. Cell phones are replacing land lines, and instant messaging, in some cases, has replaced spoken conversation altogether. Personal data assistants have replaced notebooks. CDs have replaced, for the most part, records and tapes. But will "e-books" read on a monitor ever replace the old-fashioned kind that require page turning? Will microchips, circuitry and LCDs ever replace cardboard, paper and ink? Will the smells of plastic and over-heated processors ever replace the smells of binding glue and musty paper? Ye gods, I certainly hope not. Still, there's no sense in being a Luddite, and testing out the new is one of the best things we can do. And that's exactly what Brian A. Hopkins and Steve Beai did with Wrinkles at Twilight and Dark Rhythms , two books on CD-ROM that display the text via PDF. Each "book" both collections of short stories also adds some illustrations and even some sound effects. The purist can print them out and read 'em on 81/2 x 11 sheets, but that seems to defeat the point, doesn't it? Though it's nice for the novelty, I can't say I was a fan. Perhaps it's because I stare at a computer screen for eight hours at work, and then several more hours when I get home and sit down to write. The last thing I want to do is stare at a screen again when I want to relax and read a book.
