I interviewed Ashbery years ago. I asked him about the criticism that he was a poet who did not think. 'Well, I think I think, but I don't thinking thinking is what it is thought to be.' Here, in this New York Times interview, he is asked if he feels any nostalgia for the NY Bohemia of the fifties. 'I left the country in 1955,' he replies, 'and stayed away for 10 years, in France. So I missed out on a very crucial period. I am still trying to piece together things that happened while I was gone, like the Everly Brothers, for instance.' Anyway, this is just an excuse to say that this man has written some of the most beautiful English of our time and the music of poems like The Skaters and Self-Portrait in a Convex Mirror as well as collections like Houseboat Days and Vermont Notebook runs through my head daily, making my world brighter, more astounding and easier to live in.

Extractions: If a poem were to address the reader directly instead of taking a usual narrative point of view, what would the poem say? John Ashbery's "Paradoxes and Oxymorons" answers this question directly and with frustration. At first glance, the poem seems a structured mass of words, simply constructed. However, a second look revels the poem's straightforward attempt to, ironically, reverse the roles of reader and speaker. Through its diction, it is a unique portrayal of a simple poem's reaching out to grab the reader's attention, eager to express that it is not merely a collection of words but intricately related to whoever peruses it. An attitude of regret is also apparent. The speakerexpresses concern in that he cannot control the reader's interpretation of the poem. Regardless of the speaker's intended message, the reader will evaluate as he will and, in effect, make the poem his own.

A > Ashbery, John E-MAIL Save Nathaniel Brooks for The New York Times Prolific and widely celebrated, John Ashbery has been a guiding force of contemporary poetry for most of his life. His first published work, "Some Trees," appeared in 1956, selected by W.H. Auden as part of the Yale Series of Younger Poets competition. Mr. Ashbery went on to write more than two dozen volumes of poetry, and win nearly every major award of letters, including a National Book Award, the Robert Frost Medal from the Poetry Society of America, Guggenheim and MacArthur Foundation fellowships, and the Pulitzer Prize (for his 1975 collection, "Self-Portrait in a Convex Mirror"). From 2001 to 2003 he was the poet laureate of New York State. Known for a post-modern writing style that can be simultaneously dense and funny, he was heavily influenced by artists like Jackson Pollack and Jasper Johns. Early in his career he worked as an art critic and an editor of "Art News," which gave him entree into the bohemian culture of the day. (Naturally, Warhol was an acquaintance.) Along with Frank O'Hara, James Schuyler, Barbara Guest and Kenneth Koch, he was part of the New York School of poetry, which blossomed in the city in the '60s. Its hallmarks included notes of surrealism, sarcasm and ironyessential qualities for urban life. He also spent several years living in Europe, principally Paris.

A note on John Ashbery John Lawrence Ashbery was born in Rochester, New York, on July 28th 1927, the first son of Chester Frederick (a farmer) and Helen Ashbery (a biology teacher). He went to school in Rochester and in his home town of Sodus, and at the age of sixteen was sent as a boarder to Deerfield Academy in Massachusetts. After graduating from there, in 1945, he entered Harvard University, where he studied English.
