Technorati On Monday, November 5th, I attended the John Ashbery reading at the Folger Library in Washington DC the greatest living American poet Against the Day that is a lot of pages. As I have written in the Bunker Tennis Court Oath Ted Berrigan, for example, courted both Ashbery and Burroughs in 1964-1965 . Burroughs and Ashbery appeared in some of the same little mags and, more interesting to me, Ashbery included Burroughs in the mags he had a hand in creating: Locus Solus and Art and Literature. Clearly, Ashbery recognized that Burroughs, unlike most of the Beats, had a tie to the European avant garde back to Dada and Surrealism. These ties went forward as well to the post-abstract expressionist concerns that circulated on the Continent in the early 1960s. Anyway I see a lot of connections between the two, but when I ask around about this most people want to maintain the personal and creative distance between them. I think it has to do with the level of respectability and acceptance that Ashbery has achieved despite his radical beginnings. By those beginnings, I am thinking of the general reception for Tennis Court Oath.

In 1949 he received his B.A. in English from Harvard, where he served on the editorial board of The Harvard Advocate and, (fitting for his selection as "Class Poet") wrote his senior honors thesis on the poetry of W.H. Auden. Ashbery then went on to complete an M.A. in English Literature from Columbia University in 1951. Some Trees , in 1956. Published in the Yale Series of Younger Poets, this volume established Ashbery's style of creating highly original juxtapositions of words and images. As Douglas Crase observed in The Nation : "Ashbery has created a language that restores newness as you read, a language that is always cresting with potential like a wave."

Stein In June 1993, Jane Hammond phoned John Ashbery and asked if he would draft titles for a series of her paintingsin advance of their creation. A week later, he faxed her a list of 44 candidates. For an artist to begin the creative process with a title will seem to many to put the cart before the horse. But to Hammond, Ashbery's image-laden names became the vehicle that pulled her paintings into being. The first results of their collaboration were on view in two recent exhibitions. New York's Jose Freire Fine Art, Inc. exhibited seven of these canvases, and two others from the series were included in the solo show of Hammond's work organized by Sue Scott for the Orlando Museum of Art.

As so often with one's nearest and dearests, their biographies have enormous lacunae in them. I don't know, for instance, very much about why you went to Harvard when you did, or why you left it. I don't know why you studied music. I don't know why you went to Majorca. If I knew, I've forgotten all these things. Harry Mathews: I think it's very kind of you to assume why I did any of these things. I went to Harvard because I disliked Princeton so muchI spent a year and a half there. I didn't leave Harvard early; I actually finished. I think I did two years in a year and a half, or something like that. And I finished college because I thought how much it would upset my parents if I didn't. It was a last gesture to JA: I see, I didn't even know that you'd finished college, I thought you'd left. John Ashbery, 'Litany' in As We Know (New York: Viking 1979) p. 3 'Litany' starts with a profane monologue on the left, a more 'poetic' monologue on the right, but not for lang. The voices switch sides suddenly, the last sentence of the left becomming suddenly a large vision of desolation, while on the right the last line of the first stanza, 'The milk of enchantment,' gives way by the last line of the second to 'In explicit sex.' From this beginning the two columns will mimic one another, or argue, or ignore one another for pages until the reader wonders why they have been printed together, and then suddenly there will be another leap across. The meaning of an 'independent' voice, as the poet first announces it, becomes clear. An independent voice exists only in relation to another voice. These mutually intertwined, unresolved voices together specify the poem - as they do a street.

Ashbery was born in 1929 near Rochester, New York. He is author of more than fifteen books of poems, beginning with Turandot and Other Poems in 1953, and is considered one of the leading contemporary American poets. His works range in length from two-line poems and haiku to the book-length Flow Chart Sponsor Message. Ashbery is a disconcerting poet to read. He produces poems that look like poems, yet do not live up to our expectations of poems and how they create meaning. His poems follow the action of his mind and so always are in danger of being solipsistic, yet they are also clearly engaged in a discourse with the reader.
