    Extractions: Sherwood Anderson (1876-1941) Contributing Editor: Martha Curry Teachers should avoid three erroneous approaches to Sherwood Anderson's writings: regarding him primarily as a novelist, as a regional writer, or as author of only one important book, Winesburg, Ohio Regarding the first error: even in his best novel, Poor White , Anderson has difficulty sustaining plot and characterization. Anderson succeeds best in the smaller narrative form of the short story. "Hands" and "Death in the Woods" exemplify many of the characteristics of the masterpieces of Anderson's story-telling art: direct authorial address to the reader; a circular, not linear, narrative structure; plot subordinated to characterization; simple style and vocabulary; and images drawn from elemental aspects of nature. Regarding the second error: Although Anderson is one of the many regional writers who chronicle the changes that took place in the Midwest at the turn of the century as a result of industrialization, primary emphasis should be placed on his role as a story-teller. Anderson Images In the mid-1980s, first- and second-generation members of Sherwood Anderson's family decided to use royalties from Sherwood Anderson's books to help writers. It was an obvious decision that followed a course that Anderson himself took during his lifetime. In order to do this, the family established the Sherwood Anderson Foundation, a non-profit trust. Anderson helped both William Faulkner and Ernest Hemingway get published when they were getting started. Faulkner reportedly asked Anderson to read his manuscript and Anderson replied, "Look, I'll send it to my publisher, as long as I don't have to read it." Joke or not, he knew talent when he saw it and wasted no time supporting it. It should be mentioned that both writers later parodied Anderson's work Faulkner with Mosquitoes and Hemingway with Torrents of Spring . Faulkner and Anderson were later reconciled. Anderson continues to incur writer and reader interest. An August 1998 issue of Newsweek, in commenting on the recent list of the 100 best 20th Century novels in English, called the short stories that make up Anderson's Winesburg, Ohio

Like a number of other famous writers (Chekhov, Dickens, Alcott, etc), Sherwood's childhood and adolescence knew family hardship. When his father's business failed, the family moved around a lot and his mother began to drink heavily. As a result of these hardships, Anderson left school at the age of fourteen in order to help with the family finances. As a writer he is widely known for his short stories, particularly the collection published as Winesburg, Ohio . While that book is not without critics, it will always be a favorite of mine. I was a willing reader and bought into every character and every sketch narrator George Willard spun. In a tribute to Anderson's talents, I also recall being acutely aware of the author's control as I read through the stories and afterward I may have spent as much time thinking about the man who wrote them as the stories themselves. While there will always be many things we cannot know about a writer like Anderson, we can be certain that he was a man capable of writing with great empathy. If you have not read Winesburg, Ohio

Until he was thirty-four years old he worked as a farmhand for a man named Thomas Butterworth whose place lay near the town of Bidwell, Ohio. He had then a horse of his own and on Saturday evenings drove into town to spend a few hours in social intercourse with other farmhands. In town he drank several glasses of beer and stood about in Ben Head's salooncrowded on Saturday evenings with visiting farmhands. Songs were sung and glasses thumped on the bar. At ten o'clock father drove home along a lonely country road, made his horse comfortable for the night and himself went to bed, quite happy in his position in life. He had at that time no notion of trying to rise in the world. It was in the spring of his thirty-fifth year that father married my mother, then a country schoolteacher, and in the following spring I came wriggling and crying into the world. Something happened to the two people. They became ambitious. The American passion for getting up in the world took possession of them.
