As for Furet's Penser la Révolution française , which depicts the French Revolutionaries as prisoners of the discourses they spoke, it is hard to think of a work which has done more to take French history in a postmodern direction, as its influence on Anglo-American scholars such as Lynn Hunt and Keith Baker reveals. For Anderson, postmodern thought has a structural relation to French Marxist politics. Ergo, Furet and Nora, the avatars of French liberal thought, cannot be postmodernists. This article explores the key research components for FLES* (pronounced "flestar"), provides an overview of some of the major contemporary issues, highlights FLES* and its important role in the third millennium and in the new K-12 trends and national foreign language standards, and describes the essential elements for outstanding FLES* programs. This article describes a unique, team-taught course developed as part of an NEH-funded Foreign Languages Across the Curriculum pilot project. This course was conceived of as a trailer to a world literature course, but it was restructured so as to open it up to students from Novice to Advanced levels of proficiency on the ACTFL proficiency scale. The author deals with the innovations that were made in content and in pedagogy to accommodate students at these various levels of proficiency. It is the author's intention that this experiment will serve as a model for other instructors who want to make the presence of French, or any other foreign language that has experienced a decline in enrollment, more visible on their campus.

Extractions: P ierre Alferi (b 1963) is a French poet of contemporary prominence. He has published four books of poetry. His third book of poems Kub Or, (1994) was translated into English (OXO) by Cole Swensen. Language plays a very important role in Alferis poetry and OXO offers a revealing display of his craft. The OXO poems use the concept of the bouillon cube, with each poem two dimensionally reflecting a side of the cube. The book contain seven poems, each poem is made up of seven lines and each line has seven syllables. I had a very personal reason to be drawn to these poems. It is interesting and rather telepathic that I wrote a forty-nine line poem in 2005 about fall evenings I once spent in Schenectady, a small town in upstate New York. This poem, I discovered later, had an astonishing structural similarity with Alferis OXO poems in that they were also arranged into seven-line stanzas, each line referred to one color of the rainbow and each stanza was about one day of the week. Furthermore, each stanza had a tail-end title like the sections of Alferis poems. The following interview was chiseled out of a personal communication with Pierre Alferi in the fall of 2007 while I was working on the Bengali translation of one of his OXO poems. AM: John Ashbery once said in the mid-eighties about French surrealist poetry that although they made a claim to automatic writing their poetic language was classical and calculated. While the poetry attempted to break free from all constraints of imagaination, grammatical conventions were adhered to. Would you agree ? How do you look at French surrealist poetry today ? Who amongst the French surrealists, if any, would still appeal to the new, experimental contemporary poets ?

After spending high school and college years in New England, Hejinian returned to California in 1968. In the late 1970s Hejinian began publishing Tuumba chapbooks, which was to become one of the most important series of chapbooks of contemporary poetry in the United States. Her own published work began with The GREAT ADVENTURE (197_?), following which appeared A THOUGHT IS THE BRIDE OF WHAT THINKING (Tuumba, 1976), WRITING IS AN AID TO MEMORY (The Figures, 1978), GESUALDO (Tuumba, 1978), A MASK OF MOTION (Burning Deck, 1980), MY LIFE (Burning Deck, 1980; and Sun and Moon, 1987), THE GUARD (Tuumba, 1984) and REDO (Salt-Works Press, 1984).
