Hatha Yoga Pradipika Translated by brian dana akers. Hatha Yoga Pradipika translated by brian dana Ackers When reading this fine translation from brian dana akers, http://www.yogalifestyle.com/BKBBBAHathaYogaPradipika.htm
Extractions: HOME At one time or another every serious yogi will want to spend time exploring this hard to find book. After the Bhagavad Gita and the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali (various versions of each are found elsewhere on this site), the Hatha Yoga Pradipika is a foundational text of yoga. The author, Svatmarama set down in text an outline of the physical postures, breathing exercises, mudras and various other practices that composed the Hatha Yoga of his time. This is the first surviving text to do so, so in some sense, all asana primers that have followed are based on this book. When reading this fine translation from Brian Dana Akers, it is easy to imagine yourself practicing this ancient art and fun to try to follow his instructions or imagine yourself doing so. Like many older texts it is full of exaggeration the modern reader might scoff at and cultural assumptions that we do not necessarily share. Still, this is the cloud that sent the rain of hatha yoga into the many rivers and streams we now reside next to and bathe in and regularly drink deeply of. It is nice to know where the water comes from. This 115 page paperback book costs: $12.00

Extractions: var skin = 'monobook';var stylepath = '/skins'; Jump to: navigation search Khecharimudra is a hatha yoga practice which involves surgically lengthening the tongue (and by some accounts splitting it as well). The tongue is then flipped back inside the nasal cavity for use in breath control related yoga. Svatmarama describes this practice in the still-popular 15th century text The Hatha Yoga Pradipika . The following translation ( offsite link ) is from Brian Dana Akers. Notes in italics have been added. milk hedge naturally occurring salt a powder made of an astringent fruit similar to a prune containing tannin; this powder stops bleeding by constricting blood vessels "moving through space" In his introduction, Akers notes that there has always been disagreement over which yogic activities should actually be put into practice (this disagreement is noted even in this pradipika), and emphasizes, "some practices in this book I don't recommend at all." In modern times (and quite likely five hundred years ago as well), surgical alteration of the tongue is seen as a fringe practice and is not accepted into the mainstream of yoga. That said, there it is, plain as day, in one of the most profound sections of one of the core texts. Khecharimudra serves as an excellent example of the spiritual application of extreme body modification.
